“School trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Stayed here for a week as part of a school trip, and have to say it was a very pleasant experience. It's a ski hostel/hotel so don't expect the Ritz. The rooms are fairly basic, but warm and clean and have a basic bathroom.
Hotel itself has two bars (one sports bar, where the kids can go watch TV and play arcade games) and one cavern bar (adult only).
It's more or less ski in ski out, apart from beginners who must walk about 1/2 mile to the beginners slopes.
The staff were really helpful and nothing was too much hassle for them, we even had friends round for lunch and the hotel kindly catered for them.
I would stay here again, it's ideal for a school ski trip.

“Could and should do better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

A poorly run hotel staffed by inexperienced gap year kids and managed by someone with little more idea. Agreement is with the drain smells, the treacherous icy car park and steps and the poor facilities. We encountered a dirty bathroom on arrival, a bed that collapsed, a bathroom heater with a mind of its own and a TV that didn't work. The shower was always hot and powerful but the awful clinging shower curtain made it a frustrating experience. Breakfast was poor - if you wanted a decent choice you had to be in early. When food ran out it was a long wait for basic items to be replenished. Cold boiled eggs on 2 days, tepid porridge on 2 days if you were lucky. First - search for clean plates mugs and cutlery and clear away a place for yourself before takink pot luck on what was likely to be available. Evening meals failed to live up to their description - eg roast lamb and pork actually of the pre sliced sandwich variety. The wine starting at 10 € a bottle was very poor plonk. Soup for starters often luke warm or cold and service very haphazard. The bars served overpriced watered down beer to go with the smell of drains and it was alwayspreferable to walk down into the town to one of the better value bars there. A charge to rent a padlock to secure our ski equipment was annoying as was the charge for the quiz night. We decided to book our skis from Rocket Ski finding them to be on a par with hire shops however no one in our large party was given the size of skis they requested. A school party staying in the hotel had first service with the skis and we had what was left. The school kids (Edinburgh) were all well behaved and pleasant and were no problem to share the hotel with. However the overall impression that the standards the hotel sets itself are for budget school parties. Other guests commented on poor quality beds, drains and plumbing that was inadequate and low standards of service. Thankfully our room had a good view if the slope and was warm. Others in the attic rooms with skylights were not so lucky. The hotel is well situated for the gondala, old town and the main shopping area of Villeneuve, assuming you can make it safely across the car park.(even worse when dragging a suitcase) It would only take a small amount of organisation to improve the quality of this hotel. Annoying to see staff more interested in facebook than ensuring guests can find a clean place to eat or safely make it to the snow.

“Views of a Skier”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Although classed as "Ski-out, Ski-in", if you want to attend ski school it is a long walk across a treacherously slippery ice covered path - or a longer steeper walk through Le Bez.
Even the path from the access road to the hotel front door stayed covered in ice and snow the whole week we were there (no snowfall during our stay).
External route to the Cave Bar next door never cleared during our stay.
Rooms on top (3rd) floor built into roof and very cramped.Toilet / shower room even smaller.
Advertised as TV and phone in each room, but neither worked.
Wi-fi signal only in some areas of hotel.
Intermittent pongs in some rooms - possibly air ventilation problem?

“Misleading”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

The majority of the ski lessons start at the Frejus Gondola. Access is via icy paths, a good brisk 10 minute hazardous walk. Ski out is only to the Pontillas Gondola, so if you are having lessons make sure you set your alarm. The hazardous ice commences as soon as you step out of the ski locker room-no management system is in place to clear the ice. There is a bus but we only spotted it once -we renamed it the mystery bus.
There is a overwhelming drain smell particularly in the sports bar and reception, the staff were impervious to our complaints, obviously they are immune.

Stayed over New Year and had great time, food was very good and the staff were always accommodating if the children really didn't like the menu.Plenty of hot water and the rooms were clean. This is the fourth time we have booked with Rocket Ski and they provide a good value ski in/out package.
