“4 Days of safari and hospitality that will be hard to beat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2011

Myself, my husband and our 2 sons aged 6 and 10 enjoyed every minute of our stay at Leeuwenbosch. In a very relaxed atmosphere we were well look after at all times, by the staff and our hosts (the owners) Bill and Rose who joined us in the evening and told stories of Leeuwenbosch. We went on all the safaris available and every one was different spotting all the game you would expect (lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, rhinos etc), each one with an extra point of interest for the children, they searched for terrapins in water holes and examined termite mounds which they loved. The evenings were spent with all the other guests, dinner and drinks together with talks of holidays past and present. Wholly recommended, we hope we will be visiting again one day.

“Lovely time at Leeuwenbosch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2011

Myself and my husband are just back from here. We had a fabulous time. Our room was large with a separate living room. We were sent up a bottle of champers as we were on honeymoon. Food was gorgeous. Staff were so helpful. Our ranger Luke was great - knew his stuff. This is a charming place with a lovely homely atmosphere and of course the bar is not to be missed!

“Leeuwenbosch - great family friendly safari stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

Leeuwenbosch is an execellent family friendly way to experience the amazing wildlife of South Africa - malaria free and safe for kids of almost all ages, the safari drives (2 daily with your stay) are excellent. In one day we saw everying we really wanted to see - lions, cheeta, elephant, giraffe, zebra, a range of boks, ostrich, etc.

The bar - having a drink and hearing tall tales from Bill the owner a highlight! - and dining room (old-worldly atmosphere by the fire in this lovely old house) were a lovely experience. Babysitting is available all the time (day and night) and our room was beautiful. I loved the old claw-footed bathtub and having a seperate bedroom for my son.

The Leeuwenbosch experienc was excellent value for money, a lovely three days to enjoy the safari experience as a family and to meet other travellers doing the same.

My only compliant was that the lodge is fairly close to the N2 so you do get some traffic noise - not what you would expect when on safari stay. But that was a small trade off for the ease of access and family-friendly amenities.

“Overrated as 4 star accommodation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2010

I wish to say straight away that the safari experience was very good and our guide, David, excellent. This was the final stay on our trip to South Africa where we had stopped in some beautiful 4 star accommodation and were disappointed that Leeuwenbosch did not come up to the same standard. Without a huge overhaul our room could have been beautiful. It was spacious and the bed very comfortable. However the shower rack and sanitary bin in the bathroom were rusty and the armchairs in our room had stained covers, we understood why when we had a morning of heavy rain and the water was running in through the ceiling soaking the carpeting below. This was obviously not the first time, as on looking up it was there to see by the state of the ceiling. Such a shame as this is a beautiful old house. The food was fine, as others have said, mainly roast dinners, and enjoyable to sit at one large table and share "Big Five" sightings with other guests. As for "Uncle" Bill, a little went a very long way, rather too full of himself, not our cup of tea.

“Amazing, fun and informative”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2010

Amakhala Game Reserve is an amazing family place to stay. The rooms and accomodation are in the old colonial style and the detail to cleanliness and invidual needs are second to none. Bill is constnat entertainment and treats all his guests like family. The rangers (ionn our case Luke) are incredibly knowledgeable and cope with all the questions, pesky teenagers adn sleepy adults! It is a busy but very rewarding holiday which is worth every penny. We will be revisitng!
