“Like staying with "your" french relatives..”

My husband, father and I stayed 3 nights in this charming place. It's tucked away about a 15 minute drive from Bordeaux. I felt like we were staying at a relative's chateau in the country. It is small and cozy, filled with interesting antiques. We especially loved the wood stove and the book case in the foyer. We had breakfast included every morning served by the male owner - breakfast filled us up, although it was simple - croissants, jelly, butter and orange juice. The male owner was very accomodating and pleasant, does not speak english, although that didn't bother us. It just added to the charm. He even helped us put together a wine and cheese picnic on the beautiful grounds. There are many peacocks on the property that ruffle their feathers and cry out - this too added a rustic touch to our experience. We had a 2 bedroom suite with our own spacious bathroom - plenty of room for 3 people. And very clean. The furniture in the rooms is plain and dated - but to us, that added to the charm. It's like you're staying at your old fashioned grandparent's house. Outside our room, there were even pictures of the family. If you would like an authentic, quiet, romantic, out of the way experience, this chateau is the place for you, not to mention it is the least expensive chateau in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here - well worth the price.

“A Charming Getaway locale”

Stayed for the Marathon du Medoc, second time I had visited the Chateau in a decade. The chateau was equally as lovely. Its on beautiful grounds, quiet, a wonderful getaway locale. You can't beat the almost 20 peacocks wandering the grounds who will come an inquire as you sip your evening wine on the lawn. Be sure and ask about the beds if you book one of the apartments, i was surprised when ours was 2 twin beds versus the large queen/kings that were in the other apartments. Be forwarned that the owners' English is limited- but still quite adequate to give wonderful resteraunt recommendations and make you feel welcome. Overall - it a wonderful spot - and a true bargain. I'd return in a second...

  • Liked — Beautiful setting, quiet, friendly
  • Disliked — Not for business folks - no internet, YV, etc. Its a getaway locale

“Beaut Oasis”

We loved this place! 4 of us rented an 'apartment' attached to the house. It had a really nice 'mature' feel to it.

Two issues were that we thought it was 2-bedrooms we'd rented, but in reality was 1 bedroom, with a second bed a bed/sofa in the living room. Also the breakfast was a little dull.

I just loved the grounds with animals, the ruins, the lovely plantings everywhere the autumn crocus and cylclamen in flower - stunning! So easy to take lots of cute photos.

The local town (Castelnau de Medoc) is definately a service town for the local wine industry, and there were no fellow tourists about, nor restaurants about - we had to drive 10 min towards margaux for those excellent places (Lion d'or etc). Also loved La Tupina on Bordeaux riverfront - stunning restaurant. We missed the Sunday morning market, which would have been nice to check out in CdM.

It is a fantastic location for checking out the whole Medoc wine region - it was extraordinary to visit all those places you'd only previously seen on the label of a bottle, from the other side of the world!

It's just a very pretty, idyllic location to visit - I was thrilled about the Chateau du Fulon and would love to visit again, and have recommended to my friends ever since.

  • Liked — The beautiful main building, the ruins, the vast grounds, the animals, and the age of everything
  • Disliked — Saying we had booked 2 rooms when we only got 1 bedroom and a 2nd bed in the living room
  • Tips/Secrets — nice reasonably priced central location for visiting Medoc and all those wines/food

“Get the real country feel..”

We stayed at this wonderful chateau for 3 nights and were very impressed. Yes it is a little run down, but if it was in top condition you would be paying 3 to 4 times the nightly fee, not the very resonable cost it is.

We were travelling as a family of 2 adults and 2 children aged 3 and 4 years, this chateau was exactly what we needed. HUGE, beautiful grounds with plenty of space to play a game of cricket, ride on the swing, or just lay about enjoying your wine and the ambience.

The room we had was 3 rooms interconnecting-perfect! The main room consisted of 2 beds together (which we found common in Europe), with a large wardrobe and dresser, and lovely french windows, which you could open up, pull up a chair and enjoy the peaceful evening. The next room was 2 single beds with robe and dresser and enough room for the children to play on the floor, then you had a huge bathroom with bath, but no stand up shower. (not a huge inconvenience). Everything was very clean and presentable. It is old so keep this in mind, a part off which attracted us. As said before, the breakfast is modest but very nice and all that is needed, and the host is wonderful, very old school.

You do need a car to get here from the town of "Bordeau", which is a challenge to say the least. We had a map, and spoke to the tourist bureau, and was told it would take us about 45mins...Well..3hrs later and 2 very insane adults and 2 lucky to be alive toddlers we arrived.. The main advise in driving this area I would give is do not follow road names, but the number system that seems to be easier. Like anything once you get to know the system your fine..but..

There are restaurants around the area, we did not bother, we enjoyed going to the supermakets and purchasing local produce and bringing it back to enjoy the evening and space around us.

I would recommend this chateau, it is a little run down, but not in any way to detract from its wonderful stately manor, and you get what you pay for, and I feel this was good value.

  • Liked — Being able to enjoy the grounds, large rooms, and out of city.
  • Disliked — none
  • Tips/Secrets — When you get lost, which is generally often for first timers, always stop and ask before its to late...

“A quiet and pleasant stay.”

My wife and I stayed here for two nights and enjoyed the wonderful estate. Parts of the Chateau were outdated, but it only adds to the overall charm. If you are looking for nightlife, excitement and standing showers, then this is not the place for you.

We did not know what to expect at first, but once we arrived, we were sucked right into the peacefulness of the Chateau. Breakfast was simple, but satisfying and the Medoc vineyards were only a short drive away. The owners only speak French but were very accomodating and were able to assist us with our travels throughout the area.

Not sure if we would go back again after visiting other areas such as St Emilion and The Dorgone River Valley, but we certainly will remember this place for many years to come.
