We were driving north on the A9 when we came upon this village, literally out of the mist! As I had been driving all the way from Southern England a comfort break was called for and we stumbled on this little gem of a hotel. The reception was warm and welcoming with a real log fire. Initially only stopping for a short break we ended up staying the night. The hospitality of the staff swung our decision. When we asked if some food was still available bearing in mind the lateness of our arrival we expected the standard "The kitchen closed at..." We were surprised and delighted to be offered the menu at 9:50pm! Some items were not available but this was no great hassle considering most hotels would have struggled to supply sandwiches. The food was good and well presented, the coffee excellent.
We were shown to a warm comfortable room and after a quick freshen-up I made my way to the bar, my better half choosing bed. The public bar had a scattering of locals who made me very welcome and later treated me to a “dram” of the local whisky much to my better judgement. After a sound sleep we chose a light breakfast though we could have been quite lavish judging by the other guests plates.
And so we continued our journey, when we passed by on our return journey the village and hotel were still there so maybe not “Brigadoon”.
My only criticism and I really am nit-picking. The décor of the hotel was a little too contemporary for my taste. With the exception of the exterior and the reception I could have been in Glasgow or even London. I think if this small delightful village hotel reflected its rural location in the bar décor it would be truly special.
