“NOVOTEL Ury. A transit hotel on the way south.”
My family and I used this hotel whilst transiting through to the SW of France.
I picked the hotel from my epic internet search for cheapish hotels for our holiday. This is the first NOVOTEL I have used, we were travelling to the Pyrenees so it was slightly off route but I was swayed more by price at the time than location.
The hotel is situated just off the A6 motorway on the outskirts of a small village (Ury). It is in a quiet location and without a car you would be pretty marooned. The hotel is classic 60/70s "stylee" from the outside; as you walk in to the hotel there is a reception area to the left and a small bar area to the right, all the decor in the foyer is fine and I would say fairly new.
The staff where polite and very helpful, most talked English well but do try conversing in French as it will make your stay better. as mentioned before in earlier posts the bar staff double up as waiters in the restaurant so service can be a little slow in the bar area if you are parched for your fav tipple. Here is the killer blow when in the bar!! The price of a drink would make even a Dubai prince choke on his straw, this is not common just to Novotel but it does give you a wake up welcome to France. Be prepared to pay 6.50 Euros for a large beer 4.50 Euros for a pastis and be prepared to rob a local bank for a whiskey. At the time of writing the pound to the euro is about the same once you’ve been ripped by the bank exchange rates.
We only used the restaurant area for the buffet breakfast which had more than enough choice for us. I have seen earlier reports at the price charged for breakfast in relation to what you got is not great but hey, you either travel to a cafe somewhere in the local area or get up, stick your shorts a flip flops on and saunter in to breakfast, the choice is yours dependant on your itinerary. The restaurant was busy in the evening we however went and got something local (for a food review at Novotel see my Novotel Tours sud review).
Now the main event for me when it comes to hotels is the ROOMS. It could be like Rio favella outside; but if the room is clean, in a good state of repair and time has been spent on upgrades I'm happy as a pig in muck so please take my review as such. I wasn't that impressed with the room in relation to what I paid. Yes it a decent size for 2 adults and a child but it’s a bit like the exterior, dated! The pillows are rubbish, the bed is not great and the toilet stank of,.... well you can guess. The bath/shower area is like walking back in time "nice plastic"mmmmmmm.
We had lovely hot, sunny weather so the pool was a welcomed addition for my daughter who currently is having an identity crisis thinking she is a dolphin. Nice bonus but not essential to us.
The local area commercially: Just down from the hotel on the outskirts of La Chapelle-la-Reine is "ATAC" supermarket were you can get fuel for your vehicle DO NOT BUY FUEL ON THE AUTO ROUTE!!!! The price for diesel was about 1.26 Euros a litre compared with highly inflated prices at a service station on the motorway. Get stocked up for lunch goodies prior to getting on the auto route. La Chapelle-la-Reine has also basic french amenities in the centre.
A Carrefour supermarket is on Rue de Larchant, Saint-Pierre-lès-Nemours, a town about 15 mins away from the hotel, again cheap fuel prior to travelling. Nemours is quite nice in the centre if you have time to stop. A village called Larchant between La Chapelle and Nemours is picturesque, it has a bombed out church I presume from one of the world wars.
So to summarise Novotels are not bad for the price; what let this particular hotel down was the rooms in my opinion. The location is fine (not far from Paris or Fontainebleau) if you have a car. I would recommend this hotel but with the caveat for transit only.
