“If Carlsberg did Bed & Breakfast....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2010

During my wife's recent convalescence we stayed at Church Gate in Itchenor near West Wittering and Chichester Harbour at the best B&B imaginable.

We were given our own spacious private cottage with its sumptuously appointed and impeccably furnished suite. It was set in the very beautiful and headily scented garden of the home of an equally beautiful soul, Janie.

It's difficult to find superlatives superlative enough to describe this place and its owner, the most delightful, thoughtful and attentive host you are ever likely to have the honour to meet.

From the welcoming afternoon tea and home-made lemon drizzle cake served on our own terrace in the middle of the garden to the freshly picked breakfast strawberries and rasberries as prelude to a gargantuan organic full English, or fresh croissants if you prefer, the service here is nothing short of perfection.

The exquisite attention to detail and the unpretentious organic greenness that prevailed throughout the house in this oasis of tranquillity was surpassed only by the stunning floral scents that wafted gently on the breeze through the garden as we sipped our wine on the terrace in the early evening. Paradise personified.

You'll be lucky to get in. We were.....

“Most relaxing and enjoyable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2009

Janie welcomed us with coffee and home-made cakes. She was very helpful in her advice on where we could eat, where we could walk before eating and directions. She also provided us with a parking permit so that we would not have to pay to park at West Wittering beach where we caught the last rays of sun on a delightful walk.

The food at the local pub The Ship was very tasty. I had mackerel and salad and my wife had a steak cooked rare. Would recommend it.

Breakfast the next day was superb (I had scrambled egg and salmon) with a good choice of jams and home-made bread. And after breakfast we enjoyed looking at Janie's Nigerian artefacts and framed photos.

It was very helpful to be able to leave the car parked in the Church Gate driveway for our morning walk. The invigorating scenic walk along the Chichester Marina footpath was again a recommendation from Janie. Top marks Church Gate.

“Probably the best B&B in England”

A truly wonderful place with every comfort. Nothing seems too much trouble for the fantastic Janie - she even got my husband out of trouble by lending him some cuff-links.

Superb breakfasts served on the terrace in good weather, with eggs from her own hens. And the special treat of home-made cakes or scones in the afternoon. L'Occitane toiletries, chocolates on the pillow at night, sparkling bathrooms with wonderful showers, I could go on and on.

Only possible downside would be the traffic jams coming from Chichester onto Selsey Bill in the mornings and off again in the evenings in fine weather when everyone wants to come to the beach.

Just don't tell everyone about this place, or there will never be a free room when we want to return!
