“Traditional Swiss Hotel Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

I regularly visit Wilderswil and my most recent visit was a short (four night) winter holiday in the Hotel Bären. This was also my first visit since the hotel transferred to new owners last year. I found the hotel to be very warm and clean, and I received a friendly welcome at reception. There was no problem accessing my room despite arriving somewhat earlier than I had anticipated, around midday. The hotel is located right in the heart of Wilderswil, and near to the "Dorf" (town) bus stop, making access from Interlaken West station very easy. It is only a 10 minute walk to Wilderswil train station, with regular connections up the valley to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, or one stop in the other direction to Interlaken Ost. It is also possible to walk to Interlaken in about 40-45 minutes - a pleasant evening stroll with the option of getting the train back. I stayed as a bed-and-breakfast guest; breakfast was a pleasant buffet with plenty of choice of bread, rolls, cheeses, cereals etc. I elected to buy my evening meals in the hotel's public restaurant - the quality of the food was absolutely excellent and, if you are staying in the autumn or winter seasons I highly recommend the "kürbis" (pumpkin) soup, which comes with a most unusual scoop of pumpkin sorbet in a side dish. Service in the restaurant was extremely good; friendly and attentive.

In conclusion I had an extremely enjoyable winter holiday in the Bären. Wilderswil is very well located for transport links and a lovely base for an authentic Swiss holiday experience.

“Wouldn't stay there again”

I have an enormous complaint about my stay at this hotel. They gave me a bus/train pass that would allow me to ride the bus for free. This was important to me because I earn US dollars which are very weak making an already high-priced area unbelievably expensive. Unfortunately, the staff member at the front desk misinformed me about the schedule. Even though I double-checked with her before I went out to confirm the schedule, I waited at the train station in the freezing darkness with my 8-year-old for an hour. I called the hotel and asked if they were sure the bus was running because I had been waiting for almost an hour. The same woman staff member informed me that the buses changed to the slow season schedule that day and were in fact, not running that evening. I would have to take the train which wouldn't come for another hour. The woman, who was very nice, said, "I'll send a car for you." She didn't ask if I wanted one, she said she would send it and that it would be a white car with "Hotel Baeren" on it. 10 minutes later a man approached and asked us if we were going to the hotel Baeren. I said yes and off we went in his car. When I got to my room, the phone rang. It was the front desk (not the woman who offered to send their car). He told me I had to come downstairs and pay for the taxi. I paid the driver roughly $30 including a modest tip, then told the man on duty that I was offered the ride by the previous staff member. He refused to reimburse me and had the gall to insult me on top of that by saying rides are not a service he offers, he would go broke if he did that and that it was silly to think that any hotel would do such a thing. Essentially he was saying that it was my fault for misunderstanding. I told him the exact words the other staff person had used but he wouldn't budge nor even apologize! You might ask why I didn't ask for the manager or owner. He was the owner. Miscommunication and misinformation is bound to happen especially when schedules are changing. In my opinion, however, the owner's pompous and insulting reproach is unforgivable. I would not return to that hotel if I could avoid it. I certainly wouldn't put my trust in their word.

“Visit to Switzerland”

This was our first visit to this Hotel and we chose it based on the other reviews. We arrived on motorcycles and immediately the staff moved their cars to allow us to park them undercover. The people here couldn't do enough to make our stay wonderful. We had opted for the half board option and the meals were very good and varied, not always the case with half board.
We were given a local travel pass which combined with the Swiss Card we had already purchased allowed us to use the public transport system. There is a bus stop just up the road and the rail station is a 10 minute walk away. Our room was on the third floor and had a balcony with a lovely view on the mountains, what else, it is Switzerland after all!
Highly recommended.

“EXCELLENT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

We arrived at the Hotel Baeren and was warmly welcomed by Manager Bernard Muller and taken to our room, the room was ideal for the two of us the whole room was clean and tidy, the view from the room balcony of the Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau was superb.

My wife is vegetarian and has a allergy to onions, chef cooked her a separate menu every night.
The 4 course menu each night was not duplicated during our two week stay, compliments to the chef every night. Excellent buffet breakfast.
Hotel is ideally situated for visiting all over the Berner Oberland.

“What a lovely surprise at Hotel Baeron,Wilderswil”

This was to be our fourth visit to the hotel , but on this occasion with a degree of trepidation given that the hotel had been sold in March and just in life nothing stays the same.

Oh how wrong we were , the hotel has blossomed under the new ownership of Bernard Müller ,we were greeted warmly by Beat Niederer Head of Front Desk who ensured our luggage was speedily transported to the room of our choice and at dinner the Head Waiter proved to be the consummate professional.

Over the following 13 nights the staff went out of their way to make our stay a real memorable occasion , indeed on Swiss National Day , the hotel put on what can only be described as one of the best barbeques I have come across in recent years , the choices of food was magnificent and no one could have complained about the quality or indeed the quantity. For the remainder of our time the menu at dinner was always very good and served with style and variety, never being repeated once during our entire stay . If we had one criticism, it was at breakfast time when the service and variety of available food was somewhat fragmented resulting in furrowed brows of guests and the pleading for certain dishes etc to be replenished.

It was therefore a sad occasion when we had to depart for the start of our return trip to Kent.

If anyone who has stayed previously at the Baeron Hotel and may have had misgivings about returning again under the new management , don’t be as the hotel is gradually being refurbished to meet the continuing expectations of travellers and is certainly worthy of a repeat visit we certainly will.
