“Fantastic Location for Fantastic Golf”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

What can I say..... we loved this place from start to finish!

We were a group of keen golfers (8) who decided to have a 3 night break in Brechin, as the weather has been amazingly good for the time of year!

We choose the Northern as it was only 15 minutes from the courses we wanted to play, Edzell, Forfar & Montrose.

All the rooms we had were all a good size with the best showers Ive had in a hotel, fresh with good wifi, we ate 2 nights in the restaurant, were not disapointed, massive fresh portions all served with chatty staff who seemed to enjoy there work and nothing was a bother.

They have obviously had a lot of work done to the hotel as the reception bars and restaurant are all fresh and modern looking plus there was scaffolding being taken down as the roof and brick work has all be done!

Will definitely come back in the summer, top tip.....contact the hotel for golf booking as they saved us about £100 and also took the hassle of calling up and getting times...

Well done!

“Great food, poor service, nice rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

The Northern is the best hotel in Brechin, which isn't saying much since Brechin only has 2 hotels (the other is the Caledonian, don't stay there unless you're really on a budget). I do recommend staying at the Northern, but here's the breakdown of good and bad:

Good: Newly renovated rooms, free wifi, a lovely lobby, and really delicious food. The weekend breakfast is a decent buffet, but the weekday breakfast is cooked to order and it is fantastic. I highly recommend the smokie.

Bad: Sound proofing is non-existent. My first night was a Saturday, there was a party at the bar next door. I felt like I was in the party. You can hear every conversation in the hallway. But the Northern's greatest weakness is the service. It is inconsistent depending on who you speak to. Some were very helpful, but a few of the women who work in the morning were terrible. They are prone to mistakes and aren't very professional. One kept talking to me like I was an idiot. That's a shame because this little hotel has a lot to offer.

This is a lovely little hotel. The decor is fresh and stylish, the rooms comfortable and the food is great. Most important of all, the people are very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely stay again.

“Clean, friendly, super”

When we approached the hotel the front had scaffolding up and it looked under repair, we didn't know what to expect! Upon entering, we found the hotel interior to be of the upmost standard. We were early and didn't expect to be able to check in, however, we were shown to our room (which had not yet been prepared). We were able to leave our bags in our room. The lady who cleans the rooms left her duties and rushed straight to our room. When we returned later we found our room to be to a very high standard of cleanliness. The bathroom passed my critical eye, it was spotless and the little touches of shower gel, shampoo and soap were a delight! We thought we would dine out and went to a pub down the road, which we were VERY dissapointed with! frozen, fried and cremated food! should have eaten at the hotel. We returned to the hotel and had the best irish coffee ever! The staff were SO friendly, especially the housekeeping lady from Liverpool, she went out of her way for us. We would certainly return. A TOP QUALITY HOTEL, WITH TOP QUALITY STAFF AND THE CLEANEST ROOMS EVER. WELL DONE.

Room Tip: All rooms are superb

“Nice food”

My wife and i were only here for the food but it was quite good. Thought the menu could have had a better selection of pub favourites but all in all, quite worth going to. Prices a little high as a steak pie is 9.95 but the decor inside is cozy and welcoming so didnt grumble paying that much.
