My father, high school-age brother, and I all loved our night at Kokuya. The room was spacious, with traditional tatami floor and futons, plus constant tea (complimentary) and a nice mini-bar. Our breakfast was huge and had a variety of delicious Japanese dishes, which was interesting as well. My favorite thing was our hotel yukata (robes) and the six different hot springs inside - all were fantastic! Also the town of Shibu Onsen is like time travel into old Japan, with streetside onsen hot springs, people clip-clopping around in yukata and wooden sandals, and nice little restaurants tucked here and there. I absolutely recommend a trip there to enjoy the pools, see the snow monkeys, and have a real ryokan experience!
It was expensive, but the staff were lovely (all dressed in kimono) and extremely friendly, plus the service was excellent. Well worth it for a day of true vacation.
