We stayed at Kokuya in October 2011. We found it to be excellent. (husband, myself and our two teenage sons). From the moment we checked in we were treated with great courtesy. The young man who settled us in to our room was so friendly and fetched me a GOOD bottle of champagne (hard to find at the best of times in Japan) in record time. Our room was a little dated but very clean and comfortable. The spa on our balcony was large and the amenities good. We went down to dinner at 7.30 and were served a traditional Kaiseki banquet. Being a chef and studying regional Japanese cuisine for over 25 years (as opposed to "westernised Japanese"), I found the meal to be of excellent quality using some unique local ingredients and traditional techniques. The town of Yudanaka I loved very much. I found it fascinating and really enjoyed walking around at night.
I'm confused about the mixed reviews received for this Ryokan. I agree it was vey expensive for what it was, over $1,000 just for the night, but we really had a nice time and were treated very well. I would definately stay there again and recommend it to others.
