Hi this is Jacob . I am a wildlife enthusiast and have visited a good number countries to satiate this hobby of mine. In India I have been to Kaziranga , Jim Corbett ,Gir Forest etc. The major destination left was the Kanha tiger reserve. Kanha is very famous in this part of the woods partly because it is supposed to have the largest concentration of tigers in India and after hearing great many stories about this I was really excited about the visit.
As a saying goes morning shows the day and boy was it a bad morning!!. I reached Baghira Log Huts at 9am on December 5 and had booked a deluxe suite. I was quite hungry after a long journey from Nagpur and guess what I had for breakfast deliciously cold (almost stale) bread with coffee and upma (some kind of rice dish). I ordered scrambled eggs which arrived after what seemed like an hour to me but thankfully it was at least hot. Anyways after finishing the dish I was told that my room would be ready in …4 hours . I was like [-] 4 hours on inquiring for the reason they told me its a standard policy they allocate rooms after 12 pm. On top of that the electricity is down everyday between 11 to 1pm (whatever happened to generators ???)Anybody reading please take note adjust your time of arrival accordingly. I requested for a temp room so that I could freshen up and answer nature’s call but was flatly refused even though they had many cottages lying empty. With nothing to do I decided to look around. The place seemed almost like over grown garden of sorts and seemed very sparse and I assumed that maybe the safari trips will lead to the denser jungle. After a long wait I was finally handed the keys to my suite. The rooms were really in a poor condition and dirty I cant understand why they couldn’t tidy it up after making me wait for so long. I requested the staff to clean the room again especially the lavatory. They seemed very unhappy but got the job done. I accept that running a resort in a jungle is a logistically challenging task but for 100$ a day they could at least get the basics right . Oh and while waiting I noticed that they were lot of monkeys around the huts and they would often sit on the towels that the staff carelessly laid on the floor so do check your towels for monkey poop before using them :P .
Had Lunch at 2 which could be described as palatable at best. There were 3-4 items on the buffet with dessert ,really nothing to write home about. Next up was the Jungle safari on an open jeep(costs more than 100 quid)with a forest guide. This was the part I was most excited about and this in the end turned about to be the most disappointing. Initially things looked really promising but as we went further I saw no sign of the famous tiger. The forest too seemed more like a plain with trees growing in groups. Animals that I viewed include deer , deer , deer , hyena, deer , peacock ,snakes and more deer :P. Oh and there were lots of owls (which seemed to mock at us ) hiding in the tree trunks. The 2.5 hours trip ended with a lot of disappointment and a hope to catch a glimpse of the elusive tiger the next day. I retired for the day after a lack luster dinner as there was nothing else to do (no T.V guess wireless tech has not reached here so far).
The next day I left for the early morning safari at 6:30 am. The hotel staff packed me a sumptuous breakfast of .. hold it boiled eggs and (stale) bread. Well the rest is really .. history .After a trip of almost 4 hours I was treated to a lovely sight of deer, snakes and the best of all a great picture and documentary of the kanha tiger. Yay my trip was successful I finally saw (a picture of ) the tiger :P. I had originally planned the trip for 3 nights but the entire thing left such a bad taste that I left on the 3rd day itself. In the end I would like to say that Kanha is very overrated and Baghira Log huts is MOST definitely the worst staying experience I had so far. Un cooperative staff , bland food and lack of even basic facilities was really disappointing . Do come here if you feel like camping on the plains :P ciao.
