“NEVER EVER SHORT OF EXCELLENT”

I have to say how embarrassed as a Brit with endless restaurant meals that are so inconsistent, one day perfect, next visit poor. We are not good in the UK of maintaining our level of service and quality, why are they so damn good in the States and the UAE, do we care ? I have to say that one true consistent option is the Kitley House Hotel on the outskirts of Plymouth, truly super value for money, awesome choice and served in style by a great team who make you feel so welcome from the minute you enter and are greeted by the roaring log fire. Check out the fun nights with dinner, murder mystery (now done 7 ) James Bond nights and summer parties. I can now see why they always seem busy with so many weddings now booked and who can blame those wanting to ensure that the most important day of their life is perfect. Well done to all at Kitley

“Great place for dogs and humans”

I took my wife and two dogs here for a weekend, and we were very happy.

The breakfast is the best I have ever had, ever.

The setting is excellent. Enjoyed walking round the lake with our dogs.

The atmosphere is great. The staff were nothing other than excellent

Only niggle was we went for the murder mystery evening which had a very limited menu... Veggie risotto, or duck. So if you don't eat duck you were relegated to veg only. Lazy planning by the chef. Food was good but for this money you want a choice.

“A Comfortable, friendly Country House Hotel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We always take a break early in January after playing host over Christmas and New Year and this year needed to take our Labrador with us. Searching for a hotel that will not only accept your dog, but welcome him is not easy.....Kitley does just that. All of this in a Country House setting with attentive and friendly staff and excellent and varied food. Dinner each evening was an occasion and even when the hotel was sparsely populated, as many are on the 4th/5th January a real effort was made to make the Dining room welcoming.....Log Fires help!

We found the hotel not so much "dated" (as reported by other reviewers) as comfortable and we were always warm......log fires in the dining room and hall/lounge and hot radiators in our own rooms. Indeed we had to open our bedroom windows at night! We booked a four days for the price of three package, including Breakfast and Dinner, with a four-poster suite ( Three rooms) and the bill with drinks and several bottles of wine was under £700!! All of our rooms were warm, comfortable and well presented.

A Murder Mystery was organised for the Friday evening and we included it in our package. A really good decision as it was great fun.

We found the Staff really helpful (nothing was too much trouble) and special mention should be made of Sarah and Julie whose smiles never faltered be it breakfast or a late night night-cap. Such people can make or break a holiday...they made ours.

The setting is superb....the head of a creek looking over a freshwater lake to the estuary. Lots of dog walking (and human walking) space with wonderful views.

We will return!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a suite...it's not much an it really is worth it.

“Fantastic New Year Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

We always go away for a New Year Break, and this one caught our eye as the whole itinery was laid out for you. A Casino night, a Murder Mystery night, and a Race night, accompanied by a day time activity of eating and walking and a train ride etc.
I could agree with some of the comments about the rooms, and the décor etc, and to be honest, even though the food was wonderfully presented it was anything outstanding, HOWEVER, we had the most wonderful time, I think the atmosphere of the place, the shabby chic ness and the other guests really made our stay.
The itinery was well thought out and the staff although not mega professional, and to be honest were probably students in the week, were polite and doing their best, always with a smile.
I could really pick holes in the place, but there were more positives than negatives for our 3 night stay and I really really enjoyed it.
I think if we had been there just on a weekend when there wasn’t anything particularly organised I would have been disappointed, so would perhaps advise people to go for an ‘event’.
I think we would definitely consider this for our New Year Break again next year.

Room Tip: The suites certainly do seem to be a lot bigger

“Really nice setting but.......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

I went on a Murder Mystery evening just before Christmas with 2 friends. We (3 girls) had a triple room which looked nothing like any of the photos seen on the website or this site.

It was very dated, freezing cold on arrival and almost 'tucked' under the stairs! Not at all expected from a £100 per night room! Very Disappointing, be careful which room you book.

The Murder Mystery was supposed to be held in the Dining Room but was moved into the basement (Orangery!) instead. This was lacking in atmosphere and unfortunately some of the guests who were on Christmas parties were not interested in the Murder Mystery which made it very difficult to follow or hear what was going on.

Overall, being local, we wish we hadnt bothered!

Room Tip: Ask for a suite, I am sure they are not much more money but appear to be more luxurious!
