“Pleasant surprise!”

We had arrived the day before to Cannes and the next stop on the way to Paris was meant to be Beane (Burgundy), however fortunately for us the terrible hotel in Cannes had cancelled our booking without warning, so we decided to alter our itinerary, leave Cannes early and spend one night in Les Hospiatliers before heading to Beane. What a fabulous idea that turned out to be! The drive was exhilarating, the views were heavenly, the room was acceptable, but by far the highlight (my husband's still raving about it) was that unforgettable dinner!! That night (during dinner) we had a storm, the lightning and thunder from that hilltop midieval village just added to the ambience. Thanks for the great memories, we will be back.

“Beautiful position”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2008

The hostelry accommodation is scattered around numerous stone buildings in this semi-restored hamlet. Rooms are simply furnished with small beds, linoleum flooring and `70s style en-suites, but they are clean and of a good size. The main complex and pool are for guest use only, but there is a café serving drinks, and ice cream on the lawns, and this is open to the public from mid-morning until 7.30pm. Several of the bedrooms are situated immediately above this. The restaurant is separate and has an open terrace and far-reaching views, but it is popular with the locals so booking is essential. The food is somewhat rustic with strong flavours and was disappointingly below the standard we were led to expect, Also, our bottle of wine was long past its best, although specifically recommended by the sommelier.

Much has been publicised about the on-going restoration of this medieval hamlet so cars, cyclists and walkers start arriving before 8am and remain late into the evening. Parking close to the hostelry is limited and guests have to compete with the visitors for space. Alternative space is available at a lower level.

“Well worth the drive up an ever narrowing road”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2008

The Hospitaliers is situated at the top of the hill in a mediaeval village. Access is not for the faint-hearted, but the climb is well worth it. The rooms are scattered around the hilltop and we had to cope with pouring rain during our stay which hindered getting between our room and the main hotel. The rooms are expensive but have all mod cons, and splendid views. The restaurant served some of the best food we had during a four week stay in France. sadly we were unable to eat on the terrace because of rain. We took time to look round the rest of the village in the morning and would recommend a stay here to anyone seeking luxury in the midst of an historic medieval village

“Romantic hotel in a Crusader fortress”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2007

This charming and luxurious hotel is situated in the historic Knights Hospitaliers' fortress of Le Poet-Laval in the Dome area of Provence. A romantic crumbling hamlet of honey stone houses huddling beneath a ruined crusader fortress, which was once an ancient commandery of the Knights Hospitaliers.

We managed to book the last room they had which, unfortunately, was rather small and cramped for a double. We were advised of this but had read about the place and felt that it was a must to visit. We saw some of the larger rooms and suits and were quite envious ! The view from the window was beautiful and the room was adequately appointed and very clean. There was a good size swimming pool and gardens. We thought it was good value.

There is an excellent restaurants in the hotel. There is a choice of dining on the terrace or under cover as well as a formal indoor dining room within the hotel. The choice and quality of the cuisine and wines was excellent. The staff were very polite and efficient.

Breakfast was served on an outdoor terrace in beautiful sunshine.

Beware this is a very popular hotel and you need to book well in advance in the summer months.

The following day, we spent a few hours walking around the village with its delightful ruins, museums with a few shops and restaurants.
