“Wish I had not passed so many times!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

This time I actually just stopped off and checked in.Received a genuinely warm welcome from the proprietor and also met the family!!!The hotel has a commanding view on top of a hill over-looking the bay and the village to the right.
Shown to my room - only the upstairs, left wing was open as the hotel was very quiet.Room was freshly decorated, spotlessy clean, and had a good bay view.Generous sized bathroom which afforded a long soak in a deep bath after a very long journey.
The hotel looks over a golf course and a beautiful, small beach.Went for a bracing walk (accessible from the hotel)in sub-zero temperatures. The fishing village is so old, charming and traditional but so very quiet. There was little else other than the hotel which may well be different in season.
Back to the hotel for a few drinks in the bar - roomy and smart. Then ate in the restaurant which faces out over the bay.All glass fronted so the view is captivating even in winter when the lights catch the eye!Food was excellent, well presented and fresh local produce..Well priced too.
Great night's sleep.Comfortable bed.Breakfast was the best scrambled eggs ever...with the exception of my wife's,of course!!!
Hope they level the same personal high service when the establishement is in full season...intend to come back and see!!!

Room Tip: Try to get a Bay view

“hogmany break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

This was our 3rd hogmany stay in scotland , the other 2 were a little to hectic even for our age (39-40) with a tenage lad, so we decided to return to cullen bay after a summer stay here a few years ago, and it proved to be a totally relaxing break for us all !!. we would recommend this hotel for familys and couples who want to get away this time of year or any other time infact!! The menus are reasonable, offering tasy local and authentic dishes, The rooms are very clean and we found everything was in place for our stay, nice touch with the iphone docking/charger ,my son found handy. The views are amazing to. Staff and owners allways on hand and eager to please, Will return next time we have a chance to return to scotland again(long journey 480 miles) but well worth it. Thanks Douglas, Marjory and everyone else.

Room Tip: sea view room views great

“Dreadful bar food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

It may be because it was New Year`s Day and they felt they could get away with it since no one else is open but the food was terrible.

I ordered baked potato and turkey which according to the menu was `fluffy` - it was nothing of the sort, no attempt had been made to make it appealing, the flesh was waxy and the turkey was just plain strips( with fat on) laid on top, no dressing or sauce so very tasteless.

I was told a salad would come with it . This consisted of one limp piece of lettuce and two onion rings - hardly a salad, in fact I make better more varied and colourful salads at home with plenty different ingredients.

I expected better from a hotel and certainly from a `chef` . It was really dire and they had the cheek to charge nearly £6 for it.

Rip Off !!!

“Poor service and food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

I dined here with 2 others on a whim and was very disappointed. I am from the area but live in central Scotland and was up visiting my parents and decided to have dinner here with friends. We were asked to wait in the lounge before being seated, we then proceeded to wait for 30 minutes to be seated - we were 3 of 8 people there! When I asked the waitress what the catch of the day was I was told and I quote - 'the chef hasn't decided yet' - this was the only answer given! We asked for a window seat given that the place was empty - and was told 'there reserved' Once we were finally seated in the empty restaurant it took nearly another 20mins for our food to arrive. The food was mediocre and most certainly over priced. As a last note - we were there in total for nearly 2hours and no one came to take the 'reserved' window seats. I will not return to the Cullen Bay, unfortunately eating out it very restricted in this area but there are better around with better, attentive service and better food.

“Lovely food, beautiful view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

Make sure you book to get a table by the window, the view is amazing and if it is still light you might see minke whales swimming in the bay! Visited the restaurant twice in the summer of 2010, both times was delighted with the quality of food. The first time we had not booked, and while we waited for our table in the lounge we were offered some complimentary appetisers (smoked salmon something or other, can't remember exactly but they were thoroughly enjoyed). The second time we had booked to make sure we got a window table. Food was delicious, very large portions, you get your money's worth (if you can finish it!).
