“NEVER stay at the Morar Hotel”

Stayed at The Morar Hotel after purchasing a voucher via Groupon for my girlfriend's birthday. Worst present ever!

The 2 night stay was £189, which was apparently worth £310. It was NEVER worth £189 never mind £310. The picture on Groupon was not even the hotel! Completely misleading.

We arrived at 18:00 on the Friday and had a relaxing hour and a half in the lounge area. If I was writing a review up to this point the Morar Hotel would receive a nice 3 out of 5 (might have been higher, however the jam served with afternoon tea had already been opened and used!).

The menu promised a lot, however the food was very disappointing, poorly cooked and completing lacking in flavour.

The room was small and in the eves of the property with no views. The shower curtain was moldy and the bed linen dirty.

We arrived for breakfast in an optimistic mood despite a restless night. We were however advised in no uncertain terms that we had to hurry up with our order as breakfast was only served until 10:00. We had arrived at 9:40!

Following a trip to Mallaig we had lovely lunch, however felt that we didn't want to stay another night and left on Saturday afternoon even though we had paid for 2 nights.

On checking out the friendly receptionist apologised for the room stating: 'I don't like putting people in there'. This was prior to making any complaints about the accommodation. I find it unbelievable that the staff don't think the rooms are up to scratch!

The reason given for the poor quality of food was because the main chef had finished for the season. The prices did not reflect the quality.

There are amazing places to stay and visit on the West coast of Scotland, however this is not one of them.

I should have posted a review two years ago when my wife and I visited, but at the time was unaware of tripadvisor. Having used Tripadvisor on numerous occasions to assist choosing locations abroad I feel compelled to share my experience. We arrived after a five hour drive to find a very average looking hotel located in beautiful countryside. We were shown to our room by a very dour female manager. The room was small with a poor view although clean and sufficient for a two night stay. We headed downstairs to the foyer and asked the manager where the bar was as I wished to watch a champions league football match to be told I was in the bar(A small bar in the reception area). I also asked where the tv was and was told abruptly "In your room".The tv in the room had about a ten inch screen. Wishing to enjoy our break we booked a table for dinner asking for 8pm but being told by the manager it would have to be 8pm.Went to change for dinner thinking a busy restaurant was good sign, only to find we were the only people seated for dinner. Unperturbed we decided we would enjoy our meal of "locally sourced produce" only to find the embarrassed Polish waitress informing us that our choices for both starters cullen skink and languistine were unavailable. We had wonderful smoked salmon, but the rest of the meal was average. Maybe, and I hope, things have changed for the better, but two years ago, there was no "log fire and cosy bar". Overall I rated my experience as poor, but I hope conditions have improved and the attitude of the female manager who was more interested in the pending arrival of German guests, than satisfying and being pleasant to her Scottish guests has gone from dull and abrupt to a true cheery Scottish welcome.

Room Tip: Sea view a must.

“morar”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

We visited this hotel on a groupon voucher for the last weekend of the season. The hotel is three star and just that! On arrival we were greeted by a friendly receptionist, although some of the information she gave in response to a question about the area was absolutely rubbish, and I would suggest staff actually find out about the local area. Our room was small but comfortable and clean, the only complaint I would have would be about the shower, the water pressure was terrible a mere drip to shower in! Otherwise okay, food in the restaurant, breakfast fine, but evening meal of a poor standard £16 for two courses. We ate the first night at the hotel restaurant, second night in our hotel room with a Thai carryout meal from the local Sunset Thai take away was fantastic and highly recommended. We had a good weekend in a 3 star hotel. Staff were lovely, helpful and kind, the hotel was generally okay, but we used it as a base to see the delights of this area.

“Awful !”

This is actually a retrospective review because I didn't know about Trip Advisor at the time of our visit to this hotel - had I known I wouldn't have gone.
I booked two nights DBB here as a surprise trip for my husband's 50th birthday and I did so purely on the information from the hotel's web site - looked stunning and the restaurant menus appeared superb.
We were actually away for three nights - the first was in an excellent hotel in Dornoch. From there we drove down along Loch Ness, the weather was beautiful, we visited Urquhart Castle and everything was going just swimmingly until we arrived at the Morar Hotel. A shabbier place you could not find - everything was in need of a good clean and a decent refurbishment. The food on the first night was appalling - nothing like the website menu. I cannot fault the staff of the time as they seemed to be totally embarrassed with what was being offered and we actually had a really good laugh with them in the bar after our dinner !
The following night was a little better - they actually had steak on the menu which couldn't be provided the night before and we got a free bottle of wine to 'compensate' with our previous disappointment. We are not huge travellers and I did spend a reasonable amount of money to make this a memorable occasion but unfortunately it was only memorable for it's awfulness.
Also, I have never written a letter of complaint about anything prior to this but felt that I should, if anything, inform the owners that maybe they should maybe do something about a hotel which could, given it's beautiful location, be something fantastic. I never received anything in reply.
I read a review that said the people involved came to see the funny side of it - We did make the best of it and, as I said, we had a great night with the staff, but it still upsets me that it was my husband's 50th birthday and it just should have been better.
We were there in October 2009 and by the accounts I have been reading it doesn't seem to have changed. My advice is - one to avoid!
