“Idyllic place for a wedding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

My husband and I got married here in July last year and we could not have asked for anything more. The staff were amazing, they could not do enough for us - nothing seemed to be too much to ask (from setting up a croquet set in the grounds to putting the wedding cake together on pillars) which really took all of the stress out of the day so we could just enjoy it. The venue was out in the country and so quiet and peaceful that nothing disturbed us. We had the whole manor on an exclusive use basis which was very special - no strangers or other brides getting in the way! The manor is stunning, a perfect venue for a wedding and the fact that it is licensed for ceremonies and has plenty of accommodation means that you don't need to break up the rhythm of the day by jumping in and out of cars all the time. The food was excellent quality and the taster dinner in advance meant you could choose your favourite dishes and wines. The breakfast the following morning was good too. We are looking forward to going back this year to celebrate our first year anniversary!

“Average stay but good for the price we paid!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights 27th & 28th January as part of an offer for £19 per night! I had read previous mixed reviews but thought for the money we were paying it couldnt be all that bad.

The hotel itself looks beautiful as are the grounds, we arrived late evening so it was pretty dark and we struggled to find where we were supposed to park as the sinage is very poorly lit, eventually we just parked with a few other cars that looked like they had also struggled to find somewhere lol!

Receptionist was very polite and friendly and told us our room (38) was in the Charlwood Suite, this is where i realised things might not be that great as previous reviews had all said to stay away from the Charlwood Suite! i thought we'd see what it was like before making a judgement. Its a shame actually as the building itself (not attached to the main house) really does look like an added office block, it's very unglamerous and not at all in keeping with the main building, it looks more like staff quarters! Our room was in fact though quite nice, very modern decorated and a great sized bathroom, we had no isses with lighting in either room which ive seen previously mentioned and considering we'd only paid £19 a night i was pleasently surprised, had i been a full paying customer though i would not be impressed with the building at all! Our bed was pretty small and quite uncomfortable though. It was literally less than a minutes walk from the main building, there is also a Lodge thats not part of the main house and thats further at the beginning of the driveway in, i think if people are staying there the driveway should be much better lit for them to walk to and from the main building (a previous review states someone had to drive back to their room at the lodge which i find laughable as it's literally a 2 minute walk!!?? if that!)

We didnt really see much inside the hotel, we ate out on our first night (The Arkle Manor - brilliant and highly recommended) but we decided to go to the 'resturant' on the saturday night. We were initally told to book as they were 'so busy' - there was a christmas function in the main resturant and then told they'd 'squeeze us in'. In fact we ate in what i think was the breakfast room with one other couple and around 6 other empty tables.. a tight squeeze you'll agree! The menu is VERY dissapointing and slightly overpriced. There was very little choice from memory guniea fowl, salmon, curried chicken breast and there was a side menu of 'Great British Classics' with a different dish every night, we decided on the toad in the hole from this menu then to be told that wasnt on tonight it was turkey with all the trimmings - leftovers from the christmas party next door! so i opted for a mediocre french onion soup :-(

Overall the staff were polite and friendly, the hotel and grounds were lovely but the 'office block' was dissapointing. I'd stay again but only with another cheap offer, i hear theres a £7.50 valentines room deal coming up too so maybe i'd consider it! I would recommend the hotel to friends but only if you were staying within the actual hotel.

Room Tip: Not the Charlwood Suite!

We stayed here as a stop over from France to Yorkshire on M25. Hotel was lovely. Staff were very friendly and the meal was excellent. Our usual Ibis was twice the price at Calais. A really good value deal.

“Overall, not the best on offer, in need of an update, and in need of some lighting!”

We visited Hartsfield Manor for a Company Christmas Event which was in its self excellent, the catering was good, and the service was OK.

What let down the venue was the accommodation. The room we had was in a building away from the hotel, the design of which did not fit in with the main building or the great gardens that the hotel has, it gave the impression that it was a "flat pack" add on to the hotel.

Initially the impression of the room was that it was small and dark, and that it needed an update to the decor etc. this feeling was made worse by the bathroom, which, although very large, was depressingly dark. The design of the lighting in the bathroom was extremely poor, with no light over the sink etc. shaving became a high risk activity, as you couldn't see what you were doing! The surfaces in the bathroom also had streak marks all over them, making it look like cleaning had be a quick job, and lacked attention to detail.

Room Tip: Stay away from the out buildings!

“Don't believe the photos and avoid weddings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We stayed at new year expecting a cosy country house hotel with large rooms similar to the one shown on the website. How wrong we were.

We where unfortunate enough to have a wedding party in the hotel on our first night. This meant that the main dining room and lounge were out of action. After our stay the hotel claimed that an alternative dining room was available but no mention of this was made on check-in despite our specifically asking about dining options and we saw no sign of it.

Due to a mistake by the hotel we were allocated a single room though the receptionist was quick to spot this and moved us to a different room in the training centre annex. (A good thing since our original room would have been directly above the wedding disco speakers!)

Unfortunately, although the hotel called the room a double, it was tiny and the small bed was pushed hard up against the wall. There were no drawers in the room and the tiny wardrobe was mostly taken up by an ironing board and tea and coffee making materials.

The window looked out onto a tiny courtyard at a wall 10 feet away - hardly a breathtaking view!

Going by the spacing of the doors most of the rooms in that annex must have been similar.

We returned to reception and were moved to a room with what they called a king sized bed. This was one of the disabled rooms so slightly bigger than the others though still no drawers and the view of the wall was the same.

The wedding disco could be heard from our room in the annex so it must have been deafening in the originally allocated room 14, which was directly above the disco speakers.

We were upgraded to an "executive" room in the main house for our second night which was much nicer but still nothing like the one in the website picture.

Breakfast and checkout on new year's day was later than normal but no signs where put up and no-one thought to tell us.

Room Tip: Annex rooms are tiny but don't expect the main house "executive" rooms to be that much...
