We stayed here for 2 nights 27th & 28th January as part of an offer for £19 per night! I had read previous mixed reviews but thought for the money we were paying it couldnt be all that bad.
The hotel itself looks beautiful as are the grounds, we arrived late evening so it was pretty dark and we struggled to find where we were supposed to park as the sinage is very poorly lit, eventually we just parked with a few other cars that looked like they had also struggled to find somewhere lol!
Receptionist was very polite and friendly and told us our room (38) was in the Charlwood Suite, this is where i realised things might not be that great as previous reviews had all said to stay away from the Charlwood Suite! i thought we'd see what it was like before making a judgement. Its a shame actually as the building itself (not attached to the main house) really does look like an added office block, it's very unglamerous and not at all in keeping with the main building, it looks more like staff quarters! Our room was in fact though quite nice, very modern decorated and a great sized bathroom, we had no isses with lighting in either room which ive seen previously mentioned and considering we'd only paid £19 a night i was pleasently surprised, had i been a full paying customer though i would not be impressed with the building at all! Our bed was pretty small and quite uncomfortable though. It was literally less than a minutes walk from the main building, there is also a Lodge thats not part of the main house and thats further at the beginning of the driveway in, i think if people are staying there the driveway should be much better lit for them to walk to and from the main building (a previous review states someone had to drive back to their room at the lodge which i find laughable as it's literally a 2 minute walk!!?? if that!)
We didnt really see much inside the hotel, we ate out on our first night (The Arkle Manor - brilliant and highly recommended) but we decided to go to the 'resturant' on the saturday night. We were initally told to book as they were 'so busy' - there was a christmas function in the main resturant and then told they'd 'squeeze us in'. In fact we ate in what i think was the breakfast room with one other couple and around 6 other empty tables.. a tight squeeze you'll agree! The menu is VERY dissapointing and slightly overpriced. There was very little choice from memory guniea fowl, salmon, curried chicken breast and there was a side menu of 'Great British Classics' with a different dish every night, we decided on the toad in the hole from this menu then to be told that wasnt on tonight it was turkey with all the trimmings - leftovers from the christmas party next door! so i opted for a mediocre french onion soup :-(
Overall the staff were polite and friendly, the hotel and grounds were lovely but the 'office block' was dissapointing. I'd stay again but only with another cheap offer, i hear theres a £7.50 valentines room deal coming up too so maybe i'd consider it! I would recommend the hotel to friends but only if you were staying within the actual hotel.
Room Tip: Not the Charlwood Suite!
