“Poor Quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We stayed on Saturday 4th February for one night, having stayed in the Hunley at Brotton the night before.

The room we were in (number 24) was in poor condition.
The tiles on the bathroom floor were raised. The grouting had worn away and one of the tiles had lifted so much it cut my foot.
The window in the room was single glazed wood with awful drafts.
The paint on the furniture was chipped and looked shabby.

The 'garden room' restaurant was an old wood lean-to style conservatory with very drafty windows and drips coming through the roof.
The food portions were small and not cheap.

Oh and the deer place next door is now closed to the public according to signs on the gate.

The staff, however, were very nice and polite.

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 24

“OK Stay at Whitworth Hall”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

We stayed overnight on 30th December on a B & B special rate of £90 as we were attending a wedding function there.
All of the staff were friendly and obliging. One of the guests was overcharged £3 for 2 drinks and when this was queried the young man apolgised for his mistake and reimbursed the guest.
There was a leak in the roof of the conservatory in which we gathered after the wedding servivce and when the water on the floor was pointed out as a hazard, the staff made the area safe.
Food at the wedding meal was appetising and plentiful as was the breakfast with a good selection.
The room No 27 was perfectly adequate for our purpose and we enjoyed a comfortable night's sleep.
If we got a suitable deal we would return.
The friendly deer in the adjacent grounds are a popular attraction.

“What a beautiful setting - and what helpful people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Although I have been to many Best Western Hotels in the UK and Italy - this one I found by accident - the experience could have been very sad as the next day was to be the funeral of my mother.

We arrived late at night and found that our automatic gearbox was stuck in drive and therefore the car would not start again. The hotel located an excellent mechanic who sorted out the car for us immediately after the funeral. They also found a car hire company (Enterprise) who were willing to collect us at the hotel prior to going on to the funeral.

Imagine our surprise to find that we were actually staying in the middle of a deer park in the 'rutting' season - strangely some of the younger females still found time to come over to us for a handheld treat....................

Keep up the good work Best Western !!

“Worth the trip out from Durham”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

I always stay here when I'm working in the Durham / Sunderland area as I love it so much.
The hotel itself is set within a deer park and, unusually I find, the deer are tame enough to spend some time very near the house so you can actually see them quite easily.
There is a large lake which has a folly on an island in the middle which adds to the feeling of opulence.
But this isn't an expensive hotel and yet is very comfortable. Food is excellent but, for those who tire of posh hotel menus there is Shaftos, a pub come diner, just the other side of the lake.

Room Tip: If you can get an upgrade to the rooms at the front over reception - go for it, but be prepared for...

“Beautiful hotel in beautiful surroundings”

We attended a wedding here recently and stayed over for a night. The wedding went very smoothly and the venue was really beautiful. The bedrooms and nice, well furnished and very clean but the real standout feature of the venue is the outside areas. Set in beautiful grounds with deer right outside it makes it a really relaxing and tranquil place to stay and gives a wedding a special feeling, easpecially if the weather is good enough for you to enjoy it fully. My only niggle was the breakfast - our breakfast was included in the price of the room but if I had had to pay the extremely high list price for it I would have been very disappointed.
