“Rather disappointed”

We were excited by the prospect of this hotel being the venue for our wedding and as such visited the hotel rather optimistic only to be deflated by a disinterested gentleman who really couldn't give a hoot! Not the attitude you want when you're planning the most important day of your life which is a shame as it is a beautiful venue however didn't want to take the chance of having staff spoil for me!
I am in noooooooo way a bridezilla but just want to be made to feel welcome and not that we are in the way which is how we felt when we visited this place.

“Great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011 via mobile

We stayed here as it was the venue for our niece's wedding. We stayed in a Garden Room, small but very nice. The food and service was fabulous, couldn't fault it. It was one of the best weddings we've been too.

“Overpriced and understaffed -”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

This hotel is in a good location and is basically a lovely old house BUT no thought or care has been given to the needs of guests. It is chronically understaffed. Nobody greeted us on arrival and we waited around finally going into the kitchen to find somebody. We did not fill in guest registration forms which surprised us. Our room was attractive but there was a complete lack of toiletries in the bathroom save for a fixed soap dispenser over the bath and by the basin.. As the shower did not work at all (no water pressure) when you sat in the bath you could'nt reach the soap dispenser. When I asked for soap etc. I was told they had run out. There was only one girl doing the housekeeping and therefore it was impossible for her to keep up the standards.

I must say that the food in the restaurant was exceptionally good although the prices were London luxury hotel prices.

Our family who were also staying, reported that the showers did not work in their rooms. One of our party stayed in the accommodation outside the hotel. The room was ridiculously small and you could not get into the bathroom without half closing the door to squeeze past the shower. There were no drawers and the shelves were thick with dust. It was extremely dark and I would not give this room more than a one star rating. They charged £90 a night!

It was all a bit Fawlty Towers but given the prices it certainly didn't make us laugh.
The one guy who was in charge of reception, the cellar, bar, dining room etc. etc. did his best and was very amenable. However nice he was it didn't make up for the Management's complete lack of care.

However owns this hotel should be ashamed or the treatment handed out to his guests especially since most of them are there for a special wedding.

As far as the wedding was concerned a wedding coordinator thankfully arrived on the morning of the wedding and the whole day went smoothly.

“Great country house”

I stayed for two nights, the company I was working with booked me in as it was close to the plant. I usually go for the big hotel with pool etc but I was very happy with my stay. The room was comfortable, had everything i needed, food was amazing and service with a smile.

“Missed the mark....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2011

This hotel could so easily get it right.... but just misses the mark in so many ways. I spend at least 1 or 2 nights per week in hotels all around Europe and so I know it's the small things that make the difference.

The welcome was less than enthusiastic, and the service was perfunctory at best, cold at worst. That's never a good sign.

Here's a list of very small things... so easily put right that it would make a world of difference

The bathroom door didn't shut - the handle didn't work so it just had to stay ajar.
The kettle was placed next to the only socket on the dressing table. The kettle lead was about 3 inches too short to plug in and have it on the table. Had to boil the kettle on the floor.
There were dispensers for the shower/bath gel. This was at the height of the shower - so if you had a bath you had to stand up to press the dispenser to get soap and then you had to sit back in the bath but couldn't do this safely as your hands are soapy so you can't grip the side of the bath.
The dispensers were only shower gel - no shampoos.
No little soaps or shampoos - in a hotel of this type you expect this - not cheap dispensers.
The shower was fixed to the wall at the height of about 5ft 10. So my partner had to bend down to have a shower - there was no moveable rail. I on the other hand at 5ft 1 - was too far away from the shower head.
The flowers on the table at breakfast were dead. I don't need flowers on the table in a dinky vase - but if you're going to put them there.... then make sure they're fresh.
Check out - the breakfast waitress checked us out. No one else around at all.

The food was good - but extraordinarily expensive for what it was. Have had just as good and paid far less.

The best deal is the DS menu "dine in style". This is a few choices, plus a glass of bubbly for £27.50. Some main courses are £25 on their own - so this is the way to eat for a more reasonable outlay.

So - it wouldn't take much to make it right - and then you would feel oh so much better about the cost. Had I have paid full price for this, rather than Late Rooms offer I would have been very very disappointed.

Would I go again.... ? No.
