“Had a lovely relaxing stay, would recommend”

Stayed here for 1 night lastnight, 12th Feb 2012 as a family of 4 with our 2 children age 7&8. Its what you'd expect from a traditional Scottish hotel in a lovely setting. Loads of walks around the large grounds with the River Nith running through which is famed for its fishing, something the hotel prides itself on.

When I rang to order a family room, the staff advised we'd be better with a large double which had more room than the family one with our children being young. The room was great, large and plenty of room even with the 2 extra Z-beds. Our bed must have been a super-king & was extremely comfortable. As part of our deal we received a bottle of sparking white wine which was very refreshing and a 1lb box of chocolates. I'd expected mini-box containing no more than half a dozen so this was a nice surprise.

The bathroom was large, clean & more than adequate though maybe needed a little modernising as the shower wasnt very powerful.

The evening meal was fantastic, great portions and nicely presented modern food. Breakfast was a little disappointing but mainly because they seemed to need an extra member of staff. They kept running out of various items and we had to ask for toast, juice glasses, coffee and wait for eggs etc. I'm sure this was just a blip & maybe they had someone off sick as the previous evening's meal had been faultless. All very good quality food though & a good range.

The decor is very dark wood, tartan and reminiscent of a proper country house. Our fellow guests were mainly couples, some with very well-behaved dogs, and a few families though, as its currently halfterm school holidays, I'm sure it would generally appeal to couples wanting a relaxing walking/fishing break.

We had a lovely time and wouldnt hesitate to return or recommend to friends.

“No Electric and STILL Charged”

Arrived on Friday at 2pm and hotel was nice friendly and warm....had a meal there that evening and went to bed.
Awoke in morning and everything fine as it should be ..had an ok breakfast and went off into a cold wet Dumfries for the day. Arrived back at hotel about 4.30 pm and went to dry off and get warm in room...alas an hour later ALL ELECTRICITY WENT OFF and we were left in total darkness. We lay on the bed until 6.30 and went down to see what was happening (after all NO ONE had been up to tell us) we were informed that the electric was to be back on by 7.45 and if not the hotel would provide free sandwiches and canapes....so as by 8pm still no electric we went down to reception (all in total darkness) to be told that the hotel were going to Dumfries to get everyone a chinese meal as the electric was now going to be back on by Midnight / or we could go down road to local Inn and have an allowance each of £24 to feed ourselves. We took the offer up and drove in my own car in freezing fog and cold conditions to said Inn....Had a delightful meal there and carefully stayed within our alloted allowance(GOD KNOWS WHY WE HAD AN ALLOWANCE AS WE HAVE BEEN CHARGED FOR THAT MEAL ANYWAY), we travelled back to PITCH BLACK AND COLD hotel and went to room to await the lights and HEATING coming back on at midnight....NEVER HAPPENED....awoke last day Sunday to freezing cold room / NO hot water and cereal and milk for breakfast...total joke

On checking out at 10.30 am we were told to give our Email addresses and we would be informed as to what was happening via Email....NEVER HAPPENED... next thing I know is that £182 has gone out of my account to The Friars Carse hotel in Dumfrieshire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rang them immediately to be told they would ring me back in 1/2 hour..NEVER HAPPENED...I had to ring back and was eventually put onto the Manager who told me that they stand by the bill.........What a bloody liberty to think we stumbled around in the dark for half of that weekend (and if incidentally I had fallen on the stairs in the dark they would indeed be in more serious trouble now re compensation). Thought the least they could do was give us either a free weekend or some sort of compensation for a totally ruined trip....And my contract is with the hotel not Scottish Hydro who they should seek compensation from for lost monies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Stepping back in time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

This was an excellent overnight stop and rather quaint. It was quiet there were not many residents but it was mid week in winter. It would be a great place for a wedding reception as the grounds and surrounding countryside are just beautiful. The building itself originates from 1800's. Had dinner (poached salmon which was devine) and an excellent bottle of wine and a lovely cooked breakfast for the road the next morning. Would stay again and its not too far off the road travelling south from the ferry as it is just outside Dumfries.

“travelzoo bargain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

had the pleasure of staying at the hotel last weekend for two nights with a great travelzoo offer. we stayed in one of the large deluxe rooms, recently decorated with a spendid view over the back of the house and away from the frontal parking and noisy guinea fowl. you could fault the room but it would be seriously nit picking. the breakfast was excellent and the three course evening meal on the first night (lamb medallions) was simply fabulous. the service was excellent and it never ceases to amaze me how some reviewers suffer a bad experience and we do have the same. we had white wine at £20, and sampled the whisky after the meal. a very enjoyable experience.

to be fair, the two day break was incredibly cheap and the travelzoo offer sold out rapidly. i felt almost embarrassed by how little we paid for this excellent weekend. if the weekend cost 50% more it would still be good value. wee loved it. mike and sue

“Great Place Historic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

My wife and I stayed here while tracking back to Kirkpatrick origins..... at least from our American point of view. This place is lovely, we had a few wonderful meals here, in particular one evening meal was exceptionally tasteful with an excellent wine recommended by one of the staff. Our room was spacious as well as the bath.

The building was just gorgeous as well as the grounds. We really quite enjoyed a drink on the lawn watching the sun set over the water of the river.

Great place, will stay there again if we return to the Closeburn area.
