Stayed here for 1 night lastnight, 12th Feb 2012 as a family of 4 with our 2 children age 7&8. Its what you'd expect from a traditional Scottish hotel in a lovely setting. Loads of walks around the large grounds with the River Nith running through which is famed for its fishing, something the hotel prides itself on.
When I rang to order a family room, the staff advised we'd be better with a large double which had more room than the family one with our children being young. The room was great, large and plenty of room even with the 2 extra Z-beds. Our bed must have been a super-king & was extremely comfortable. As part of our deal we received a bottle of sparking white wine which was very refreshing and a 1lb box of chocolates. I'd expected mini-box containing no more than half a dozen so this was a nice surprise.
The bathroom was large, clean & more than adequate though maybe needed a little modernising as the shower wasnt very powerful.
The evening meal was fantastic, great portions and nicely presented modern food. Breakfast was a little disappointing but mainly because they seemed to need an extra member of staff. They kept running out of various items and we had to ask for toast, juice glasses, coffee and wait for eggs etc. I'm sure this was just a blip & maybe they had someone off sick as the previous evening's meal had been faultless. All very good quality food though & a good range.
The decor is very dark wood, tartan and reminiscent of a proper country house. Our fellow guests were mainly couples, some with very well-behaved dogs, and a few families though, as its currently halfterm school holidays, I'm sure it would generally appeal to couples wanting a relaxing walking/fishing break.
We had a lovely time and wouldnt hesitate to return or recommend to friends.
