Four of us stayed in this hotel as a base for some winter walking as we looked to bag some munro's in the highlands.
Based on previous reviews I have to say it was 50/50 whether things were going to work out or not. Having booked via walkhighlands.co.uk the booking went through ok, but having tried a half dozen times to confirm the reservation on the phone, I failed until the night before we arrived (the answer phone wasn't giving me the confidence I was looking for).
We arrived to a pleasant environment, a nice looking reception (a little dated), clean and tidy. At first it seemed that nobody was home, but we finally found "Robbie" who was watching TV in the lounge. This is where things get interesting.....
Robbie (who turns out to be a very decent chap), informed us we were the first group to stay there in the three months (quiet winter !!) and that nobody else was due to be checking in during our stay (quiet February). You can take that one of two ways - that's great if you are looking for a quiet time and the place to yourself, or rather dull if you are looking for social stimulation.
Hmm..... Jack Nicholson in the Shinning or Anthony Perkins in Psycho take you pick.
Being there for the mountains and not the hotel facilities/social scene, we accepted it as kind of quirky but no big issue....
We were shown to our twin rooms, and found that the heating seemed to have been off the last three months as well. Robbie soon equipped us with bar heaters and the rooms soon started to warm up nicely.
Breakfast was a simple continental affair, but sufficient with Robbie keeping the hot coffee flowing and there is a pretty fantastic view to eat your toast to. Dinner was basically up to us - well the place had been closed for three months and the cupboards were empty.
After that the weekend was all fairly normal - Robbie again proved himself to be a gent when we suffered a flat battery and he trawled Onich for jump leads and another car in working order.
If you are on a budget and looking for a handy place to base yourself for bit of walking this place isn't bad - just a bit quiet.
If you are looking for a romantic love nest - this may not be the best spot (unless your nocturnal activities are rather noisy then the empty hotel might be just the place for you !)
