“Not very illuminating”

I stayed for two nights with my grandson in this old hotel. The setting could not be better being only a few miles from the beautiful Glencoe and Loch Leven. The staff were very friendly but scarce on the ground. Our twin room was spacious and the view from the window was spectacular.
I do have some complaints however. The corridor lights work on a rather poor sensor system and in some areas you are several steps along in the dark before the lights come on. The TV in our room only worked if you moved it to the window and put the aerial out the window, even then you could not get the five main channels. There was none of the customary toiletries in the bathroom and when I asked I was given two small bars of soap. The shower and the toilet cistern were temperamental and worked only when they felt like it. I pointed these out to the management. The breakfast was poor but the evening meals were good. In saying that I will concede that the cost was reasonable and I would go back but only if the above faults were remedied. I would pay more if the hotel improved.

“A glass half full and half empty”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2010

Four of us stayed in this hotel as a base for some winter walking as we looked to bag some munro's in the highlands.

Based on previous reviews I have to say it was 50/50 whether things were going to work out or not. Having booked via walkhighlands.co.uk the booking went through ok, but having tried a half dozen times to confirm the reservation on the phone, I failed until the night before we arrived (the answer phone wasn't giving me the confidence I was looking for).

We arrived to a pleasant environment, a nice looking reception (a little dated), clean and tidy. At first it seemed that nobody was home, but we finally found "Robbie" who was watching TV in the lounge. This is where things get interesting.....

Robbie (who turns out to be a very decent chap), informed us we were the first group to stay there in the three months (quiet winter !!) and that nobody else was due to be checking in during our stay (quiet February). You can take that one of two ways - that's great if you are looking for a quiet time and the place to yourself, or rather dull if you are looking for social stimulation.

Hmm..... Jack Nicholson in the Shinning or Anthony Perkins in Psycho take you pick.

Being there for the mountains and not the hotel facilities/social scene, we accepted it as kind of quirky but no big issue....

We were shown to our twin rooms, and found that the heating seemed to have been off the last three months as well. Robbie soon equipped us with bar heaters and the rooms soon started to warm up nicely.

Breakfast was a simple continental affair, but sufficient with Robbie keeping the hot coffee flowing and there is a pretty fantastic view to eat your toast to. Dinner was basically up to us - well the place had been closed for three months and the cupboards were empty.

After that the weekend was all fairly normal - Robbie again proved himself to be a gent when we suffered a flat battery and he trawled Onich for jump leads and another car in working order.

If you are on a budget and looking for a handy place to base yourself for bit of walking this place isn't bad - just a bit quiet.

If you are looking for a romantic love nest - this may not be the best spot (unless your nocturnal activities are rather noisy then the empty hotel might be just the place for you !)

“Not recommended”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2009

Greeted at front desk by two dysfunctional but friendly West Indian ladies. Room looked lovely , great view but spouse got a bad dose of bed bugs and was itching for the next 10 days. The Restaurant food at night was very average...no wine list....slow service. Breakfast was fine however. Cost of room was above average and only offered continental breakfast until I asked why and they readily agreed to a full breakfast. Lots of corridors......you would not want a fire in the building and had to escape

This place has so much potential, looks great from outside and wonderful views ...could be real hit with the right staff and a good chef.

“Beautiful location, great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2008

On a tour through Scotland we stayed at the Alt-Nan-Ros by recommendation of a friend. I have to admit my first impression was a bit uncertain. We were greeted by the owner and she seemed a bit distracted. However we had a lovely room on the 2nd floor overlooking the water. The room had a four poster bed, floor to ceiling bay window overlooking the Loche and an up to date bathroom. Breakfast was great with lots of fresh ingredients. On our second night we ate dinner there and it was one of the best meals we had in Scotland. Fresh salmon with a delightful sauce. We had the opportunity to chat with the owner, Rosemary I believe was her name and learned that they had bought the hotel a few years ago and are trying hard to upgrade the place little by little. She was a lovely lady with a good philosophy, make the guests feel special and provide a warm atmosphere. Service in the dining room was a bit slow because they were down some staff which they came out and explained. but we were happy to sit and look out at the beautiful scenery.
I know this hotel has had some bad reviews but I disagree. I would recommend the hotel to others. It's just a beautiful spot with a cool hotel with very nice owners.
