“Great for a quick lunch - amazing chips!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

Went to the Swan for a change rather than the Bowl as noticed it had been refurbished.
The place has been totally transformed and not a shadow of the dreary old pub it was before. Welcoming light decor with a great fresh menu. Only had an hour for lunch so quick pint and a home made 'Swan Burger' ordered. Food was delicious - burger big and juicy, ciabatta bread, lovely salad garnish and the best bit....huge home cut chips!!
Definitely recommended...will be back

“Uncomfortable night.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

We chose this hotel as it was close to the motorway and therefore convenient, this proved to be its only merit. The room was in an ugly annexe outside the pub looking over the car park. The room felt cold and damp. We managed to get the heating on though we had no instructions. The mattress was obviously the cheapest possible and gave me a bad night sleep. The room was clean and the breakfast Ok though the woman serving spoke poor english and made a couple of mistakes with our order. I would not reccommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Don't go in the annexe.

Hi Gillian,

I'm sorry that your experience at The Swan Hotel wasn't a good one, we try to make sure that everyone has a great experience with us.

Having recently taken over the business we are in the process of replacing the existing beds and mattresses to ensure all are of the quality to ensure our guests have a great nights sleep.

We have taken your advice and now include instructions on how to work the heating systems within our welcome pack.

Unfortunately we can't change the view of the car park but we are in the process of re-developing part of it into an outside seating area, with more flowers and planters.

I hope that you may consider staying with us again in the future in the knowledge that we are making improvements every day.

“Welcome change”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

We popped in here for a quick weekday lunch. The place has just been taken over and was still being re-decorated, and now has a young, enthusiastic couple running it. They have transformed the atmosphere and the food. A new chef has brought in fresh, (largely) local ingredients whose origin is listed on a blackboard. We had one starter between us and then sandwiches with chips. The generous (hardly starter-sized) serving of haddock and pea risotto served with a poached egg was impeccable. Both the smoked salmon with lemon mayo sandwich, and the beef with horseradish sandwich were excellent and well served with salad garnish.
Considering the quality, the prices are low. This strategy is in order to rebuild the reputation of this comfortable pub.
Early days, but a promising start.

Room Tip: We just ate here

“Grotty”

The Swan Hotel really does not live up to the "Hotel" label. Think youth hostel or student accommodation instead. The accommodation block is separate from the pub and the damp musty smell as I entered it, followed by the sight of mould growing up the walls and over the shower in my room was inexcusable.
The heating is either on maximum or completely off thanks to a timer rather than a temperature control and the mattress was lumpy.
It looks like the rooms have been recently redecorated, but not resolving the damp and heating problems before redecorating is a fundamental problem.
