....just how brilliant this hotel is. We stayed here for four nights, 9/1 to 13/1/12 in room 11, which is superb (see a previous review).
However, we first discovered the hotel in 2001 and have been returning regularly ever since. Since the owners took over in 2003 (Stuart, Nicky and Kay) it has improved immeasurably and in that time we have stayed in many of the rooms, with our budget determining the one we book, but we have never been disappointed.
We tend to eat in the Spout bar (public one) as we like the atmosphere, but always have one meal in the restaurant. We ate in there on our last night and the meal was excellent; really tasty.
The staff are brilliant, with a special mention to Jason, Catherine and Amanda, who are like old friends now.
When it's running, the train is well worth a trip; we like to go to Whitby on it. When there, the open top bus is a great way to see the town, before having a crab sarny in the Duke of York overlooking the harbour.
Also not to be missed is the Birch Hall Inn in Beck Hole, just outside of Goathland, which has to be seen to appreciate it - it's wonderful.
There are great places to visit, like Robin Hoods Bay, but the real gem is the moors. Drive round and soak them in.
This is a fabulous hotel at any time of the year, but, in the late afternoon, when the fires are roaring and my glass is full (hot chocolate mug for my wife), is there anything better???
Room Tip: The standards, whilst smaller, are very comfortable and great value, whist the superiors and suites...
