“Oh dear, very average”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2010

First note of warning - do not stay here in cold weather. We stayed in December 2010 and the temperature outside was approx -10, it wasn't much warmer in the bedroom.
We booked an 'executive' room - never has the word been so incorrectly used.
The room had one small fan heater which was not even turned on so took ages to heat up. It sounded like a lound car engine, so turned it off during the night, but eventually had to put it back on as we could see our breath it was so cold.
One thin duvet, no extra blanket - fortunately we had travelled with one in the car so had to use this.
Cleanliness was highly dodgy, there were a couple of piles of sawdust in the room and also the desk top was dusty. The bathroom was ok, if you do not mind the previous occupant's hair being left behind.
Even when we went for breakfast in the morning, the dining area was not heated and was freezing cold. The breakfast also did not look very fresh.
The staff were ok, but when I complained of the unsatisfactory condition of the room on check out all the person said was ' oh sorry about that'.

I would NOT stay here again, I gave the independent a chance but in future will stick to the Travelodge

“what an appalling place”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

Shown to our room by friendly staff (overworked) but oh dear! The smell was foul and they did move us....we had room service and had to scrape off the burn from our meal with tissues, and throw most of it away. The whole place, having a timber interior is a firetrap and the deep stairwell as you go down through the one door to the rooms at the end of the corridor is a downright death trap also, carrying suitcases in sideways, you cannot see the unguarded stairwell down to car park level,(no warning notice) the photo we have taken show quite clearly that it is an accident about to happen.

Breakfast-we had hoped that they might have cleaned off their grill but the bacon and tomotoes were just as charred...

In all, a total waste of money, and yes, having a bathroom carpet-wthout a bathmat-disgraceful..there were even silverfish darting round. We even had to roll up sweaters because the pillows were so hard. Tried to get a bathmat but the girl on reception was so overworked we had to queue then leave it. Sent an e-mail, it bounced back, left a letter-no reply!

“Wouod not stay here for longer than 1 night.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2010

The location is good in that it is situated on the A1 and easy to find. The reception was good, the bedroom clean but the carpet very dirty. The bed was lumpy and did not give a comfortable night. The bathroom was OK but had a carpet which I find very unhygeinic. Evening meal was not good value. It was expensive and the portion was so great most of it was wasted. We did not enjoy the breakfast either. The coffee was cold, and the cooked breakfast looked horrid, so we did not bother. We noticed that other guests were leaving theirs. If this hotel is ever to be recommended it needs a great deal of TLC as it is very tired looking. I would not stay again unless I had no choice.

“Ideally position for the A1/North Yorkshire but skip breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2009

We stopped off at the Lodge overnight en-route back from the Highlands. Initial impressions were of a hotel that needed a bit of TLC and that impression didn't really change through our stay. We'd booked an executive room (bigger TV, bigger bed) but found the bed very uncomfortable and barely slept at all. The room was spacious and clean though a little worn but certainly above average for the price if past experience is anything to go on.

Breakfast the next day consisted of a buffet with cereals and juice and/or a barely-warm selection of bacon, eggs and the like. I avoided that and stuck with cereal. My wife was braver and tried the cooked option but left most of it saying it was pretty terrible.

Don't let this put you off though - overall the stay (if we'd managed to sleep) would have been a pleasant one - despite the location there was very little noise from the nearby road or service area, the staff were friendly and it's convenient for the A1 and nearby services and attractions. Rising earlier would probably have improved the breakfast experience.

“Seen better days”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2009

A good value overnight stop hotel, that is ideally located as an overnight stop just before Scotch Corner on the A1. However, it could really do with a lick of paint and freshening up, if it wants to compete with Premier Inn. First impressions of the reception, were of the lovely odour of a smelly dog. Staff were friendly if a bit uninterested.

Room was clean but had some awful floorboards which creaked dreadfully everytime someone walked down the corridor, which kept waking me up. Rooms looked half new, half tired with some nice touches but bed was pretty uncomfortable and rooms were too hot.

Breakfast was pretty cheap looking and tasting. Hotel could really benefit from getting some good local ingredients being in the heart of Yorkshire to leave you with a better impression.

Overall, a no frills one night stop, that is perfectly adequate, nothing more.
