We stayed 4 days in early October 2011 at the Usha Lexus Varca Palms Beach resort. It was absolutely wonderful. After a smooth check in, we and our bags were in a poolside cottage - a stones throw from the beach. Our welcome pack included- Goan port wine, fresh fruit tray and bottled water. The room was large, clean with comfortable bed. The Air conditioner worked very well in the humid afternoons. Bathroom was clean, decent size and well aired.
The beautiful swimming pool was clean and chlorine well balanced. I swam twice daily. The pool is very popular with guests—then mostly Indian with some foreigners. The foreign tourists come late October thru March.
For meals we went to Neil’s Cabana—the large beach shack restaurant. (The other restaurants open late October when the weather cools.) The Cabana is within the 150 meter Coastal zone where permanent structures are not allowed. It is just 20 meters from the beach. We could see/hear the waves, smell the sea and get the cool sea breeze. Food was delicious- Indian, Goan, Chinese cuisine was very good. Some menu items are seasonal. Buffets were tasty, having variety —a good mix of vegetarian, non vegetarian—each of Chinese, Indian, local and Continental for a total of 10 entrees plus two desserts to suit the varied guest mix. Breakfast buffet had delicious fresh cut fruit- we had lovely papaya, water melon and melons. There were always two fresh juices—during the stay we tried the range of pineapple, orange, water melon and mango juice plus lime soda and lemonade. The resort changes menus to match guest demographics. The Cabana Bar’s selection of late afternoon and evening cocktails was decent. Service was good. The staff were very helpful to two handicapped guests—one a young girl on a wheel chair and a spastic gentlemen.
The South Goa resort is perfect for restful family vacations or a young couples get away. The downside is the strong local taxi union (independent of the resort) which leads to slightly expensive North or Old Goa excursions (around Rs 2000+ or $45). The action (pubs & bars) is North Goa. South Goa offers peace quiet and beautiful beaches.
The Resorts fantastic private beach offers unspoiled soft sand. The beach Wave bar offers snacks, cocktails and a perfect venue for watching gorgeous sun sets. Sea scooters and boats are rentable - though I did not. Some guests were para sailing. I enjoyed regular sea swims, chilling on beach chairs and umbrellas that the hotel thoughtfully setup.
The resort is well maintained and beautifully landscaped. There were many flowers blooming-adding to our unforgettable holiday. The staff was very helpful and accommodating as my mother has bad knees. We look forward to coming back.
