“Fantastic Inn on Enchanting Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2007

We stayed at the Hotel Maestral in June of 2005. We found that the hotel proved to be well represented on the hotel's website. It was a well-constructed, well-maintained hotel with very helpful and friendly staff. The hotel proprietor, Filip Horvat (who is an interesting gentleman, having spent much of his career as a renown photographer covering international events for the likes of AP and the NY Times) was wonderful, and provided us with a terrific tour of nearby towns and national parks.

The hotel's restaurant is good for a meal "in-house," and the island has a couple of other restaurants to choose from.

If you are looking for some peace and seclusion on your vacation, this is a terrific spot for you. Access to the island is available via regular ferry service to the mainland and nearby islands.

Enjoy!

“Charming Island Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2007

We stayed here as part of a tour group and I must admit that having seen multiple rooms for the same price, there is quite a bit of discrepency between some of the rooms. Fortunately for me, I had a corner room on the second floor, with a harbor view. The stone walls were accented with lovely green shutters.

The staff was friendly, assisting us with phone calls and letting us access their computers to check e-mail, etc. The continental breakfast was adequate, but guests can order tasty ommelettes from the kitchen.

I would recommend this hotel without reservation.

“Beautiful Location, Excellent Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2007

I have been in two minds whether to write this review but purely for somewhat selfish reasons. My wife and I loved our stay at Hotel Maestral on the island of Prvic and part of me wants to keep it our little secret. A relaxing, car-free oasis is a perfect antithesis to our daily lives in London and this is what this little island offers, while the staff at the hotel complement this with their professionalism and quiet efficiency. We first found out about Hotel Maestral two years ago and stayed there for four nights in July 2005. Even though it was its first full season in operation we were so pleased with our stay that when we decided to visit Croatian coast again this year, we chose to spend our holidays at Hotel Maestral. Our stay this time was for 6 nights at the beginning of July 2007. While I think more than half of hotel’s rooms have great views of the harbour, we actually chose a room facing a narrow side street as it is a little quieter and because we didn’t spend much time in our room and instead enjoyed the same great views from the restaurant terrace every morning over breakfast.
Our room was of good size and we liked the décor – the contrast between the modern, minimalist furniture and the original stone walls of the building work really well. The bathroom could perhaps have been a little bit bigger, but overall, the quality was at the very top of what can be expected from 3* accommodation. Air-conditioning is standard in all rooms – particularly useful this year (July 2007) with the temperatures constantly above 30C during the day.
The room was cleaned daily and we found fresh towels every day upon our return from the beach.
We chose to stay on a room and breakfast basis as we wanted to be able to sample the food from all the restaurants on the island – not as difficult as it sounds since the island has 6 or 7 restaurants, including the hotel’s restaurant. This isn’t to say that we didn’t eat at the hotel. We had two dinners there on this visit and thoroughly enjoyed them. The hotel restaurant is actually better known for its ‘peka’ meat dishes (veal, suckling pig, lamb) which are cooked in a ceramic pot under hot coals. All I can say is that the veal was excellent.
Finally, our comments regarding the service at the hotel – courteous, friendly and professional.
Filip Horvat, the owner, personally contacted us before our first visit to provide us with information on the best way to get to the island (we drove to Croatia that year) and in fact organised transport from a nearby town (there are boats that run regularly from Sibenik aand Vodice however).
Oh, and for those who just can’t live without their Internet access (I resisted until the last day), the hotel now has a broadband connection with Wi-Fi connectivity for the guests.

“Great Location Friendly People”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2006

I've just read marci16's review and am really surprised. We stayed for four nights June in the same room i think. (large with six windows, view of the harbour) for around 100 euros a night. The staff were very friendly and took us out on boat trips twice. (see photo attached) The great thing about this island is that you can travel easily to other islands and plunge into the sea in deserted bays with out a soul around. The food in the hotel is normal croatian cuisine. The fish on the grill was the best thing. Maybe the lobby could be more comfortable and we would like to have had better internet access, but the hotel staff said the island doesnt have broadband. But the rooms were clean, and the design has a very fresh feeling to it. We live in the region (slovenia) and know that hotels in Croatia can be pretty average, and the service can be rough. Not here though. This place was good value and we will be going back.

  • Liked — Great location, fresh design and friendly staff.
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask the staff to take you out on a boat trip and go swimming in the open sea!

“Dirty & terrible food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2006

We stayed 6 nights halfboard in the 3 * star Hotel Maestral on the car-free island of Prvic Luka, near Sibenik. The Time Out Croatia guide praised it a lot, but boy are they wrong!
The island is beautiful, the scenery lovely and the location of the hotel - a renovated former schoolbuilding - super. We had the best room of the hotel, with 5 windows and a magnificent view and paid quite a lot for that (=140 euro/night) - considering the region. We saw some of the other rooms in the house and they are pretty small.
It is such a shame and wasted opportunity the hotel is so bad: "stylish" here translates as 100% Ikea and the common areas have a distinct youth hostel feel. It is badly kept: in 6 nights, the sheets were NOT changed ONCE, there were hairs on the floors and hardly no cleaning of the (bath)room during our stay. The terrace smells of the sewer that flows directly into the sea and the food was VERY bad: never before have we been offered fishsticks with french fries and cornichons as salad, dessert wasn't included anyways! Extra side orders were unappropriate expensive (for example 20 kuna (= about 3 euro) for a handful of cooked potatoes - for Croatia VERY expensive); the a la carte prices were the most expensive ones compared to the 4 other restaurant we saw on the island, service was hardly friendly, with the only exception the guy responsible for the grill, Sascha, who was very nice.
Breakfast is served form 8-9.30 in the moring, quite early in our opinion for a holiday hotel.
The advertise having TV and Internet. Well, there is a TV in the room - but it only has HR 1 on it - all in Croatian - so that helps only if you understand Croatian. Internet is next to the reception, a very slow connection thats costs 1 kuna per minute - ridiculously expensive compared to internet café's in Zagreb or the classy 4* Hotel Park in Split, were we stayed as well.
The hotel caters to swimming & sailing groups so during 5 out of 6 nights of our stay there was a big group of 14-16 people around - and that is were all the attention goes to. We got a very second class guest feeling there, not only because of the food: the air conditioning was turned off the night there was no group in the hotel.
The prices they are charging are in NO relation to the value they are offering. We would never return and recommend for this pretty island to rent an appartment - there are plenty that seemed nice on wonderful locations.

  • Liked — the location and views
  • Disliked — the bad food and that it wasn't clean
  • Tips/Secrets — don't go there, rent an appartent instead

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to correct some facts Marci16 states in his review.

The price of our best room in September is 108 Euros not 140. Other rooms cost 64 and 72 Euros (with a sea view) breakfast included.

Breakfast is served between 8.00 to 10.00, not 8.00 and 9.30.

Our rooms are cleaned every morning. Cleaning staff give guests the option to have their sheets changed every day, otherwise they are changed twice a week.

There are 4 tv channels in the rooms, and satelite tv in the sitting room & reception area.

Food. We serve traditional Croatian food and seafood, as well as a selection of top Croatian wines. We do our best to satisfy customers individual requests. A broad selection of guidebooks and newspapers have given us positve reviews.

Internet. This is something we would like to improve but because Prvic is an island we only have a dial up connection. The high prices relate to Croatia Telecoms charges. We hope to have wi-fi once the island has a broadband facility.

Obviously it is dis-heartening to hear one of our guests has been disappointed with their stay. And we would like to address problems whenever they arise.

I would stress that we have a large number of guests who return here frequently, both to stay in the hotel and use the restaurant. In two years of business we have had some very positive feed back.

We had very good reviews not only in Time Out ("Restaurant Val serves excellent Med fare on a waterfront terrace") but in Rough guide to Croatia, "12 tastefully furnishes air conditioned rooms with original details including cool stone interiors and wooden shutters," and Cadogan, "best small hotel in the region perfect for a bout of stylish escapism" We are also listed in the new edition Alastair Sawday's Special places to stay in Croatia.

We value feed back from all our customers. In this particular case we had no idea of Marci16's concerns. None were raised during his visit. Perhaps some of these issues could have been resolved during Marci 16s stay. We would like to take this opportunity for him to contact us directly and address any problems further, and perhaps offer some compensation.

Yours sincerely,

Filip Horvat
