I recently stayed at this hotel whilst on a tour of D Day Landings with a holiday company. This hotel is extremely popular with French business people and appears to be the standard of a budget hotel chain in France. Do not expect the standard of our Travel Lodges or Premier Inns.
The rooms are dated but spotlessly clean with beds that are very narrow and extremely low to the floor. However, the beds are very comfortable. One strange thing, in a twin room, there was only one extra pillow and one extra blanket.
The TV only had CNN as an English language option and believe me, that gets tedious after a while.
Beverage facilities are basic, plastic cups, 1 tea bag, 1 coffee, 1 sugar and 1 milk jigger each but these facilities are not the norm in France so it was nice to have.
The bathroom is tiny but more than adequate and the shower was powerful enough but the tray is quite high up to step in. Be very careful stepping out, make sure you have a towel on the floor and hold on to the door otherwise it is a bit dodgy.
The room was cleaned daily and once over the initial disappointment, good enough for a base from which to explore the area.
There is a McDonalds and a budget supermarket across the road which I would recommend you use as the food in the restaurant at night was extremely poor - not sure if this is just due to 'British tastes' but if they have a mushroom and tomato salad on the menu - avoid it - seriously awful.
Breakfast is continental style and quite heavy on cheese, ham and salami but cereal, bread, danish, yogurts etc., are available. Their coffee is lovely as is their chocolate but put in a bowl and add hot milk otherwise you get a massive jolt of chocolate first thing in the morning :0)
This hotel is in an industrial area and right by busy main roads which never appear to quieten down but to be fair, most of our Travel Inns etc., are similarly placed.
One tip: if females are travelling and in room on their own, make sure they are put in a room on the first floor. I stayed in a ground floor room and the window had no security or catches so if you wanted some air at night, you needed to prop a chair against the window with a heavy case on it to ensure that it couldn't open wider. I didn't feel that the hotel was unsecure but it is not a good idea to have no security catches on the ground floor windows.
There is a tiny (and I mean tiny) bar and seating area with a limited choice of drinks which we found to be really expensive. £12 for 3 pints of lager as an example.
Caen is about 40 minutes walk away - which I wouldn't recommend but the hotel can arrange a taxi for you if you want to travel out in the evening.
