“A little patch of calm in an otherwise crazy city.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2010

This is the best and cutest place I have stayed in years. The cabins and caravans are a novelty, and offer a unique way to stay at low cost in a hostel environment.
The area it is in may not be to everyones taste. A good 30-40 minutes trip to and from the city centre, it is out in a small stretch of countryside with lots of fields, wildlife and, of coure, the lake.

The outdoor kitchen is well stocked with equipment, and the environment encourages honesty with regards to your food being safe. The kitchen is cleaned 2-4 times daily, and the shower and toilet blocks are cleaned at least daily also. The main reception is well stocked with goodies to eat, and provides small pizzas and toasties should you want something more satisfying. ( snackfood is, afterall, important when visiting amsterdam.)

The beds were comfortable, the communal areas had a great atmosphere, and the staff were warm and friendly. We struck up friendships and still chat now.
The novelty of having ducks and chickens wandering around is great, and a caravan has been converted into a cinema of sorts with a large flatscreen HD tv and a wide selection of movies to choose from at €1.50 per person at a time.

Breakfast was also great. With free tea and coffee all day until 11pm in reception, and a wide variety of foods.
Each morning we were given our fill of cereal, toast, fruit juice, yoghurt, warm bread rolls and a different hot DIY option each day. ( pancakes, eggs or poffertjes, a national favourite)

A wonderful place to stay, although possibly better suited to longer trips as those on 2 or 3 day visits to Amsterdam may not appreciate the long distance to get into the city centre.

“A relaxing and tranquil setting, great hostel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2010

Lucky Lake is awesome, despite being a twenty minute metro ride out of Amsterdam. The cabins, kitchen, showers and toilets are all very clean. Breakfast is great value, you even get to cook additional things each day (eg. eggs one day, pancakes another etc). The setting is beautiful, there were ducklings and chicks wandering around while we were there. The ammenities are great, there is a little cinema at the hostel, bike hire is cheap, cooking facilities and fridge space is perfectly adequate. There is a little grocery store at the hostel, and you can order simple hot snacks. If you are staying in Amsterdam for more than a couple of nights then definitely think about giving this hostel a go, you will feel so relaxed and refreshed at the end of your stay due to it's rural setting! Highly recommended.

“Wonderful time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2010

We stayed at Lucky Lake last summer and had a wonderful time. The open air Kitchen is very cozy and great for making a nice dinner. The campers are very comfortable, and the overall atmosphere of the place is both funky and homey. The staff is fantastic, and there is a shuttle running all day to get you to the subway. We enjoyed hanging out at the campground much more than in the crowded city. They even have bikes to rent to grab groceries or just sightsee (as you are situated in a beautiful countryside.) We would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to visit Amsterdam!

“Great camping trip”

You rent a small caravan camper, ride a bike to town for groceries, and use an open air kitchen to cook for yourself. Very friendly and outgoing young staff. Very cool place. Great place to go bike riding. Smoking is a GO as there is a lounge in the center of the camp with communal bong and pipes though most people seem to be into beer drinking at the kitchen picnic tables. No problems. Good WiFi internet. Only open in the warm months as it's an open air camp except you sleep in a small caravan. Great cheeses and meats available at the local super market. Awesome Italian food ingredients available. 1 Euro shuttles to the train station for going in and out of the city center. No charge for shower and WiFi. This place is just outside of Amsterdam in a country setting. All is self service, but not super cheap as it's in expensive Western Europe. You will pay a lot to do your own laundry and cook meals, but it's quite a special place. Every thing is over priced from an American perspective, but Western Europe is simply a different economy of scale from the USA.

Highly recommended.

“Lucky Lake is a misquito feeding ground!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2008

There were MISQUITOS GALORE!!! We could hear them buzzing in our ears as we slept. They found their way inside even with the windows closed! First of all, the "hostel" was basically comprised of a bunch of caravans grouped together. The staff weren't overly helpful or friendly. The washrooms were on one side of the camp site, so they weren't necessarily in close proximity to all the caravans. Aside from the misquitos, there were spiders everywhere! This is definitely not the place for someone with a bug-phobia (i.e. ME). PLUS the caravans weren't sound-proof, we could hear people in the communal tent talking/laughing loudly in the middle of the night as we were trying to sleep. We had to complain to the staff NUMEROUS times before the noise finally stopped. Not to mention the long commute to the city centre - about 30+ minutes via bus/metro. I would definitely never come here again!

  • Liked — The price was okay. The shuttle service was appreciated.
  • Disliked — The location, the misquitos, the spiders, the lack of noise-proofing, the proximity of the washrooms, the staff
