This Chateau really is a medieval castle, with moat and gates, but it is in a sober Dutch style, nothing that would make you look your eyes out. Very friendly staff. I was given a room (1.01) right above a restaurant that had it's roof open, but I was given quickly a better one (room 3.08) which has a splendid view of the pond with a tall tree on a lake (illuminated at night). The room is a nice mix of classic and modern style, nice bathroom with big bath although I suspect cold in winter. The room has no airco, but they have ventilators. As it is right above water there is musquito protection but it makes the view a little less nice of course . No minibar. Good TV (not flatscreen) , a Loewe, with many channels( incl. BB1 and 2) but no teletext and no pay-TV movies. Normal room key, not a lot of hightech.
Nice walking and cycling in the area (bicycle rent in hotel for 12 Euro for a whole day). Next to the hotel is a pottery museum. Last weekend a German wedding couple had there wedding pictures taken around the hotel, so it's obviously a great spot. Fantastic buffet breakfast, one of the best in my life. From 8- 10.30 on Sundays, 7.30 till 10 on Mondays. A great thing was that for a little extra (15 Euro) I had the room till 5 PM ! That made all the difference and I loved it. Wonderful indoor swimming pool and there are beauty treatments (not cheap). Restaurant was entirely full on a Saturday night. There are 2 parts, smoking and non-smoking. In the oldest part (smoking) was a big and noisy group and that seemed very annoying but one has the choice to take the other part and it seems wise to me to enquire about a group possibly having made a reservation. Reviews on a Dutch website show that the quality of the food in the restaurant is quite excellent now, albeit somewhat expensive and portions not too big. I did not eat there so can't judge.
There's a tennis court (concrete, so all-weather).
Two terraces on the water at opposite sides of the castle. The only noise/sounds were of dogs and playing children but not of hotel guests, so it's fairly quiet and relaxing. Nice bar in the central lounge with a piano (don't know who plays it and when).
Hotel can be reached by public transport by a train to Venlo, then bus 66 from the station to Tegelen, stop "politiebureau", then a 13 minute nice walk , cross the street, into Kruisstraat, then right into Stationsweg, then across the railway, then left into Kasteellaan. That bus is every half hour, connecting well with the train to Eindhoven and beyond.
Highly recommended but beware of restaurant groups.
