“Cosy, peaceful hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 April 2010

It's quite near the Schiphol airport (about 15 mins by van). The manager was good to personally drive me to the airport at 5:30am for my flight out from Schiphol. When picking me up on arrival at Schphol, the driver showed me where to get what bus to go into the city center and was very helpful. It's not a fancy place but it's great for a good night's rest at the end of a full day of touring the city. The bus system is a bit of a bother because you need to catch 2 buses to get from the hotel to the city center and buying a GVB 24 hr card cannot get you on the Connexion bus or the train. Other than that the connections were only about 5-10 minutes in between and were very smooth. I would especially recommend this hotel to people who have very early or very late flights since they do pick up and send you to the airport plus the public transport to and from the city center is convenient enough to enjoy the visit.

“Inexpensive, pleasant and comfortable with just a few problems.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2009

I booked this hotel on ihthotels.com and got a good price of €60 for a comfortable, clean room near Amsterdam Schipol airport. They picked me up at the airport within 10 mins of my call. The driver was good and pleasant. I arrived early evening and the staff was not very pleasant. They said their credit card machine did not work (heard that before) and I had to pay cash. No smiles and answered questions reluctantly. I asked for a shuttle in the morning for an 8:30 am flight and they said only the 7:15 am was possible. I found out in the morning that there had been a 6:30 am which I would have prefered. The room was comfortable and clean. They had WiFi but it was slow as molasses. Difficult to use it. In the morning, the staff was quite pleasant and nice. A different driver drove me (and others) and I arrived in time for the flight since I had checked in previously. I would stay there again. Good price and comfortable room. The free shuttle works.

“This hotel manager saved our trip!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2008

We arrived at the hotel totally dejected, since our most important piece of luggage containing wedding clothes and gifts had not turned up at the airport, and the personnel had no idea where it was. We were leaving early the next morning for another city and despaired of ever seeing it again. The hotel manager, Gijs Schelvis, telephoned, used the computer and worked literally hours until he located it, and the next morning we retrieved it at the airport. Without his help, our trip would have been a great disappointment, to say the least. He was quick, efficient and relentless in helping us. In addition the small, cozy hotel was very clean and attractive, in a quiet little town about 20 minutes from the airport with a free shuttle to and fro. The room was very small but comfortable and after all, this is Europe! I recommend it.

“Please Don't Go!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2008

Arrived at Schipol on Saturday morning and phoned Zwanenburg from the airport Hotel service. We were told we would be picked up by shuttle in 20 mins but it took longer. The drive to Hotel was hair-raising to say the least and the driver is actually the owner/manager. Once at the Zwanenburg we paid our money for 2 nights stay and breakfast and were then given a key and a remote control and taken out the back of the hotel to what can only be described as glorified dog kennels in two long rows. We were told we couldn't smoke in the room (which wasn't surprising as you could swing a cat in it) and could only smoke outside. This was our romantic weekend away - and I was devastated. We stayed one night in this dingy place with no natural light unless you wanted to be on display to all guests. We didn't sleep well because the bed was uncomfortable. There was an unpleasant smell from the drains and the bathroom we used only because we had to. With the exception of the lady who cleaned the room, the staff were unfriendly, especially when they knew we were leaving the next day. We ended up in Amsterdam for the second night's stay and had a wonderful time in The Amsterdam House Eureka (which was only a few Euros more). Also, it is at least 15 mins walk to the bus stop to Amsterdam and the aeroplane disturbance was considerable.

“Cheap and Cheerful at the Zwanenburg”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2007

First, I think there is a popular misconception that Holland is cheap; it isn’t! The cost of living is very similar to London, so if you want a top end hotel, you will be paying top end prices. So in context, the Zwanenburg is cheap and cheerful. I stayed here for one night in October 2007 with a friend while visiting mutual friends in the vicinity. A twin room cost 99 Euros a night. Breakfast was included at 8 Euros each, so total cost was about £60. Going Dutch, say £30 each.

My experience reflects those comments already detailed. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The water in the bathroom was piping hot, so one had to be careful not to get scalded. The lack of plug for the bathroom sink was slightly inconvenient. The rooms are centrally heated, so you won’t freeze. The hotel had free Wi-Fi access, which was a bonus.

The hotel is in a suburb of Amsterdam, so lacked activity and nightlife. We managed to find a cheap Pizza restaurant at opposite end to the High Street to Lidl, so weren’t too displeased. The hotel is close to the airport, but the night curfew ensures an uninterrupted sleep.

The staff offered us the use of the Hotel Shuttle Bus back to the airport as an alternative to the local taxi firms as it was indicated that these are expensive. As for breakfast, it is a little spartan but there is cereal, etc, and you are offered the option of a ‘boiled egg’, so the staff aren’t that bad! In conclusion, you pay for what you get.

  • Liked — Inexpensive
  • Disliked — Maintenance faults in the bathroom.
