I had a three-day meeting at the Utrecht University and for this hotel is conveniently located, but that's about it.
The hotel is very proud of itself, but they don't live up to that standard because of lacking service and average rooms. The people at reception have fake smiles and look down upon the customers. You get the feeling that you should be glad that you can actually stay there. They don't really pay attention to you (pronouncing the standard phrases but not watching you at all) and are very busy amongst themselves, consequently quite some mistakes are made with regards to invoices, credit cards, names etc. I was with a small group (6 people) and several people experienced the same problems. When they notice their mistake they don't apologize, but laugh at you or amongst themselves, as if it's your own fault (for having such a difficult or strange surname or company name etc.)....
If you take a standard room ("economy") it can be at the far end of the hotel (quite a long walk for older people!) and it will be really old-fashioned. I stayed in a Van der Valk hotel close by about 15 years ago and it was exactly the same room. Room was clean, but the corridors smelled stale and mouldy. Don't be fooled by the pictures on their website. To give you an idea: they have 91 economy rooms, 15 comfort rooms and 9 deluxe rooms...
When you check in they ask you to give your room number card at the waiter every time you order something, because this is more convenient for the hotel. We tried this when we were having a drink on the terrace outside and the waitress sighed extensively when I asked her to put it on the room. She said it was easier if we paid cash. When I explained what reception had told us, she said there was no problem at all and with an annoyed face put it on the room card. The other people at the table didn't dare to follow the same procedure anymore: they all paid cash, afraid to annoy the waitress even more.
We had an evening meal at the restaurant. Again a lot of fuss, trying to impress the customer, but not living up to it. The waiter wasn't able to explain properly about the dishes, just telling us that we could be sure it would be nice and he didn't say that something wasn't available until you ordered it. The meals tasted not bad, but average for that price.
Breakfast buffet is good, not terribly high standard, but there's enough choice, as always in a Van der Valk hotel.
I would not choose this hotel for a visit of Utrecht, as it's quite a walk (about 6 km to the town centre). I was told the hotel is ideal for walks in the area (woods), but we didn't have the time to do this.
