Having stayed in this Ibis hotel Annemasse, just accross the Swiss-French border near Geneva. When you check hotel rates in this area, you'll notice that hotels on the French territory are cheaper then on the Swiss side. Now, is it worth to save some money, let's see!
Access:
The hotel is located in France, the village of Annemasse. I arrived by aircraft at Geneva Cointrin Airport (GVA) at 23h15 in the evening, and was appointed to use public transport.
In the baggage reclaim area at the airport, just left of the 'declare/nothing to declare lanes', you'll find a ticket machine with a single button. This machine issues a 80-minute free public transport ticket for greater Geneva, including SBB rail to main trainstation (Cornavin) and all bus/tram lines. Press the button, and the ticket is issued.
Go to SBB/CFF railway station (follow the signs) and take a train heading for Geneva. Basically ALL trains go to Geneva Cornavin Station (if not sure, or not on the info-panel, just ask the train-chef). It takes 5 minutes to reach Cornavin station, and there walk to the direction city-centre/trams. Outside, go right and just around the corner, you'll find the tram-stop for line 16 ► Moillesulaz. This tram circles about every 15 minutes until about 1am in the night. Take the tram to Moillesulaz (use the free ticket you got at the airport!).
At Moillesulaz, you get off and you will find yourself at the Swiss/French border (you can pass without check for passport).
Now you can walk to the hotel, follow the main road from the border straight out all the way to the hotel, which takes about 10 minutes, maybe 20 if you walk really slowly. On the road, there are 2 supermarkets (Spar and Casino), and various bars, restaurants (mostly Kebab). You just continue until you see the Ibis Hotel on your lefthand side.
Check-In:
very quick, we used Accor Hotels website for reservation, and I got a corner room on the 4th floor. There was no need to fill out any form, probably because I am a member of there loyalty scheme. The elevator (2 in total) are really tiny and hot, but they do the trick.
Room:
Electricity works without putting your keycard somewhere, so that is convenient. Airconditioning works perfectly in July, at 3 levels for cooling. The room is large, especially for Ibis standards, and is not in the standard Ibis layout. A flatscreen TV is wall-mounted and a writing table and storage is available. The carpet on the floor looks clean and recently refurbished. The bed is a bit small (140x180cm), but during the night I woke up several times, since the mattress was too thin and uncomfortable. Also, the bedframe is wooden plate (see pictures). Aside from that, beware that rooms on the front of the hotel (mainstreet) have some noise from traffic passing by.
Bathroom: large size, but older style. Overall clean and good, soap/shower gel dispensers are available. Only 2 towels provided even when travel with a partner, so 1 per person. The sealent in the bathroom showed some mold, which is basically the only shortcoming when it comes to the bathroom.
Bar/Restaurant:
Alcohol is served until 1am at night due French regulations. Bottled beer have a same price as draft beers, which I found surprising. On the menu, which can be orders 24 hours a day, you will find several snack items, basically frozen products which were heated in an oven before served. The prices are low (around EUR 5-10 per item), so it does the trick.
Breakfast:
Breakfast rate is EUR 8.00 per person, and it from 06.30am-10.00am. It is buffet style and overall fresh food. Choose from 3 juices (orange, apple, multifruits), several bread, ham, French cheese, several jam, yoghurts, cereal, croissant and 'pain au chocolat', and also small pancakes (really nice!). I can overall recommend taking this breakfast.
Additional items:
Free WiFi is provided in the hotel, although signal strength seems best in the lobby/breakfast room. Weak signal was found in my room on the 4th floor.
**Note that several reports claim that the distance/location is far from good, but I judge that for this price, and quiet location just accross the border, is very convenient for people who have no problems to walk for 10 minutes. You can get huge savings when you decide on this hotel for your visit to Geneva. Tram 16 (Cornavin station to Moillesulaz) also make 3 stops in the main shopping street of Geneva, in the city-centre, very convenient for your sightseeing purposes to this city!**
Room Tip: Ask for a room on the back side (to avoid noise from traffic on the main street)
