“Peaceful, Beautiful place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2009

We spent 2 nights at Monaterio as part of a week long group bike ride. I'm a Californian, and so staying in the place where the monks were trained prior to leaving to build the missions is simply amazing.
The grounds are beautiful, the pool is OK, it's clean and the rooms are spacious. Pillows weren't my style. Pools are cool in Spain-they're cooled by forcing the water through underground pipes.
We had delicious breakfasts in the morning and a nice dinner as well. Oh, get a cappuccino in the 'living area'-yummy!
Apparently Orlando Bloom stayed here while filming a movie---

“Historic hideaway in need of a little TLC”

Stayed at the Monasterio de San Francisco for one night as a stopover from Cordoba to Ronda. Compact reception area, efficient check in. Room was indeed very large and the bed wasn't two matresses zipped together, however, the pillows were terrible, thin and lumpy. We explored the grounds and whilst there was a pool, found it sorely lacking and in need of a clean. The gardens are set to vegetable patches and I trust the produce is going to be used in the hotel - thumbs up for that. Back to our room, the en suite bathroom was in what I assume to be traditional in style and a little basic for my liking. Plenty of hot water but insufficient light - hubby couldn't see to shave properly. Fabulous aperitifs in an ante room which I take it is the bar when the hotel is busier. Set dinner was lacking in choice and disappointing as was breakfast which was dull, dull, dull. There is very limited secure parking available at a fee of €8 the alternative is parking on the roadside. Also be aware that 'recorded' bells chime up to midnight and from seven (or that's when I first heard them). There was no mobile telephone coverage in the hotel or grounds.

“Awesome Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2009

Traveled with a party of 7. 4 Adults and 3 kids (8 thru 13). We had 2 rooms - 2 adults and 2 kids in one and 2 adults and 1 kid in the other. Very big rooms. Pool was open and looked very nice; but we did not use it due to the coolness. Had breakfast buffet (10 euro pp) both mornings. Lots of food and good atmosphere. Grounds were very well maintained with gardens, etc.

We used this place a base to explore Cordoba one day and Seville another. Took the train from Palma Del Rio to Cordoba. But I would not recommed it for the hours are not the best and the location of the train to the hotel is about 15 minutes by car. You cannot walk it.

“Peaceful ex monastary, traditional hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 March 2009

We stayed for 1 night in this hotel as part of our cycling country tour. It was our favourite small village hotel of the whole trip. The rooms are very clean & large, although the lighting isn't too bright. The hotel has been kept looking as it has for hundreds of years, but it doesn't feel tired. It has a few beautiful courtyards, a large pool & garden & the location is fine for wandering through the village.
The breakfast buffet was tasty, although small, I think that, that was because we had arrived late for breakfast & our friends had devoured most of it :). I would love to go back & visit this hotel & area of Spain.

“Quiet oasis”

Enjoyed a very pleasant stay in this hotel. The pluses are that it has maintained its character as a past monastery with various antiques, frescos, furnishings, etc. Room was fine and fairly well appointed. Bar/lounge set in impressive room, lovely gardens / orchard, pool and courtyards. Lots of places to find a quiet corner to read a book or contemplate the sorroundings. Service friendly, helpful and personal. Located in town centre near local amenities, bars, restaurants, etc, which there are a few. Good access by car. Minuses -Not many except that the bar food menu was limited leaving you with the a la carte menu from the restaurant which was pricey, minimum staff made the place feel a bit deserted at times (but this didn't affect service), and the hotel lacked a lift to some of the rooms which could cause obvious problems for pram pushers like us or the disabled. However, these drawbacks did not affect our overall enjoyment of the hotel.

  • Liked — Setting / Character of hotel
  • Disliked — A bit deserted
  • Tips/Secrets — There are nearby restaurants which are fine for meals outside. Also a supermarket very nearby to buy bottles of water, etc, if needed.
