“Wellness package ... felt seriously let down”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 April 2010

I decided to treat my self and my sister to a spa break and decided to take advantage of the Easter break . As she's based in the Varese we selected the hotel as it was close enough and was listed on a specialist site .
We booked the "Profumi and sensazioni " package staying 2 nights.
The hotel is located close to the main dual carriage way and shares some of the facilities
with the motel that is wrapped around its perimeter.
Having traveled extensively it is the first time i find a 4star hotel sharing its grounds with a motel.
The room was big , clean and decorated in minimalistic style , the highlight of the room for us was the roomy bathroom .
To gain access to the wellness center ,one has to walk across the reception area so it could be off putting if you are at all self conscious of how you look with your bathrobe and plastic slippers kindly provided by the establishment .
The treatment room both my self and my sister were showed held two massage tables and the therapist seemed keen on keeping the door open rather than switching on any lighting . In the mornings the room adjacent to the wellness center was being used for some kind of meetings and my experience was that the level of noise traveling into the treatment room prevented me from actually achieving any level of relaxation.
As part of the package we were meant to have a number of treatments in the hamman area ( savonage +steam room + rasoul + gommage + hair mask + relaxation tank + full body massage +face mask) . In the hamman we observed large dark mould patches both in the steam room and the tepidarium area. We were left in the tepidarium area for quite a long time and it felt quite cold . There was one therapist only and everything for me and my sister was booked at the same time which meant one of us was left waiting and hanging around . When it came to the full body massage we were taken to the treatment room and it noticed that the towel had not been changed from the previous client as it was already wet and stained with mud .
The therapist left few times to attend to other clients who were at that stage in the hamman area . Again that broke whatever level of relaxation we had achieved .
The pool was closed for the whole of the second day we stayed and the gym was a carpeted room with few machines ( some of which were broken ) but could not be defined as a proper gym by any means.
The restaurant was the saving grace of this establishment and the personnel there were attentive and helpful as my sister is gluten intolerant they provided her with a gluten free menu for each meal and ensured she could choose between different options .
Having stayed in different wellness centers across Europe we decided to leave the second day without even finishing the treatments as the level of stress that the experience brought on was more than the enjoyment .
On leaving we were told we would be contacted by the management however a week after we are still waiting for that call.
All in all very poor for a spa break however it might be suitable as a base to explore the wonderful natural areas all around.

“Spacious, comfortable rooms, pity about the air con”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2009

The hotel is a puzzle. The location for one - to the north of Vogogna, and in a commercial zone. The design - like a mix between 5 star hotel and a factory. The underground car park is enormous, and all the public areas such as reception and restaurant are big also, but minimalist in design.

We chose the hotel for 3 main reasons, the location (we were on our way back to the UK, visiting the Italian Lakes and working our way west), availability (we booked a week prior to travelling) and the facilities (such as secure parking, a pool and a gym).

The rooms were really impressive, huge and very well furnished. The bathrooms were as good as we have seen in 5-star hotels. The big thing that lets the hotel down (as others have noted) is the poor air con. You can't leave windows open due to the proximity of the highway (and mosquittos), and the air-con is either not big enough, has no cooling ability, or isn't maintained - it just doesn't work.

The pool and gym, plus sun deck were all good standard. We only ate breakfasts in the restaurant (which were fine). We ate out because the kitchen was closed the day we arrived, and after that we decided it would be too warm to eat in comfort there.

We stayed towards the end of July/ early August, and the hotel seemed fairly empty, I'm guessing due to its location. It's about 30 minutes by car to Sressa or to Verbania, and 20 minutes to Lago Orta. The Swiss border is also only 30 minutes away.

Due to the size / emptiness / design of the place (and the air-con) we wouldn't use the hotel again for a long stay, but possibly a one-night stop-over.

To locate the hotel, from the south, drive through Vogogna, and carry on for around 3km until you pass over the river and get to the commercial zone. The hotel is signed to the right (behind a shoe factory). Don't use the address given for your satnav - you won't find it! The hotel reception appear used to directing people trying to locate it.

“Fantastic clean hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2007

Initially quoted around £800 for a week - ended up paying aroung 350 booking with hotelsrus.
Very clean
Reception friendly and spoke english.
Our room was on the bottom floor and as such had a door in the bedroom that went outside to a covered car port. As it rained a few days, this was excellent for loading up the car.
A bit out of they way, but nothing should you have a car.
Would definately stay here again.
Rooms quiet, lots of parking outside your room or in the carpark below ground. This was wel lit up. Security cameras for access etc.
Breakfast was juice, yogs, cereal, coffee, tea etc
If you go around may, drive up the Simplon pass - lots of snow to see!!!

“a decent stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2007

The location is convenient only because it is right off the freeway which unfortunately means it's found in an industrial area with nothing around. The only thing that saves the location are the surrounding mountains.
We stayed a w/end parked in the hotel so no need to look outside. The hotel itself is modern and clean. The rooms were spacious but not very sound proof and extremely hot. (Maybe this was an isolated case). There was only local TV and a small minibar. The restaurant was average with somewhat odd service. (or it was efficient at times and disorganised other times). They claim to have a wellness center (spa) but basically consisted of 2 rooms in a depressing narrow hallway with 2 chairs and water machine. I expected a more professional oriented center with a cozy feeling but was not such the case. However the treatments were well done. There is also a fair sized pool, mini jacuzzi and somewhat of a weight room. Apparently there is a hammam but was out of service during our stay.
All in all it was relaxing. We didn't have great expectations so were more or less satisfied.
Wouldn't recommend more than a 2-3 nights stay.

“Between lakes and mountains”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2006

Conveniently located near the mountains and the lakes, the Valgrande Hotel is also great to visit Switzerland due to the proximity to the border. We rented a car in Malpensa and drove around the lakes between Italy and Switzerland for a few days. So it’s the ideal if you’re driving and plan to visit the region. The hotel is close to the road and easy enough to find if you notice the sign to Vogogna Motel witch is in the same compound as another reviewer reported (thanks for the tip!). It’s a new hotel and very, very roomy, we were amazed by size of our room. It’s very modernly decorated and spotlessly clean. The staff is nice and helpful. The pool on the top floor is very pleasant after a hard day traveling around. The only thing I could criticize was the breakfast that was a bit repetitive after a few days and not very complete, otherwise very good.
We made our reservation through Bancotel for a mere 70 Euro a day, breakfast included. Definitely a great choice!

  • Liked — Good value for money, location
  • Disliked — breakfast
  • Tips/Secrets — Take a good look at the hotel's location on the to avoid loosing time looking
