“One of our favourite hotels - superb!”

We love this place! First stayed here for one night in Sept '10 but never got around to reviewing it - we revisited this July for two nights so, at last, here's my review.
The rooms are in the original Chateau and have lovely high ceilings which assist in keeping them nice and cool in the hot summer months. All rooms do have air-con though. WiFi connection is a bit hit and miss. My husband had to sit out in the corridor or go to reception for a consistent connection. Room 22 (standard) is a good size but the bathroom is rather small. Towels and toiletries all of good standard. We preferred the superior room (38) we had last year as both the bedroom and bathroom were much larger.
The Chateau sits in beautiful grounds and has some stunning examples of species of tree. The swimming pool area is very nice with comfortable sun loungers. Pool towels are provided. We did not use the gym.
If the weather is good then dinner is taken outside on a terrace which is protected on three sides by buildings that help keep the area warm. The whole ambience is very romantic with fairy lights on the walls, candles on the table and spread throughout the garden. Service is excellent and the wine list is to die for. The menu is not huge but the food is well presented and very, very good. The majority of staff speak exceptional English and aim to please. One gets the impression they love their job and enjoy working at Montcaud. The owner, Mr Rudy Baur, is quite a knowledgeable character and makes a point of introducing himself to his guests. He remembered my husband and I from our visit of last year. He has a passion for music and told us of his plans to host a classical music festival in 2012.
Breakfast is taken in the original Chateau and is really good value for money. No hidden extras here. Omelettes, fried, scambled or poached eggs and bacon can be ordered at no extra cost. The hot chocolate is superb!
Would we return? Absolutely! We may even manage to get to one of the much feted Sunday Jazz Lunches.

Room Tip: Go for the much bigger superior rather than standard room

“The perfect Provence haven”

This hotel is what you expect and hope for from a Relais and Chateau listed hotel. The rooms are in a beautiful chateau and are charmingly furnished with a Provencal note. Breakfast is superb and is served until 11 a.m. with a wide range of multi language newspapers available. Lunch in the shade of the towering chestnut trees is a special experience.
The whole atmosphere is calm, relaxing, friendly and faultless. Service throughout the hotel is impeccable. We discovered the Chateau when we were looking for somewhere to stay when going to the Music Festival at Orange. The owner, Rudi Baur, a passionate music lover himself, has devised a perfect recipe for enjoying this event: tickets, transport, food (delicious) are provided in a way that makes this a really wonderful experience.

“It is a French Fawlty Towers!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

We were expecting Relais Chateau standards but unfortunately they were not forthcoming. The intenet was too slow to download a movie and was not available in the room. The fitness centre doubled as a tiny tot creche. The gym machines were out of date and in poor maintenance. The grounds photograph well but omit the sound of the nearby road noise or the buzz of the breeding mosquitoes in the stagnant pools just outside the hotel rooms and the reception/dinning area. The basement area for the spa, steam room and sauna was locked unless booked in advance, and the rooms adjoining the spa smelt damp. Breakfast is served in the main house, but the sound of them preparing the food at 6.00 am makes the experience less than perfect. Oh and by the way don't expect a cooked breakfast, we were not offered one!!!!Reception and the dining area are in another building so if you like to dress for dinner and it happens to be raining this could add to your experience of a lovely evening. If you leave the hotel for a night out, don't come back late having forgotten the entry code because there is no night porter!!!

“very good hotel”

we spent two nights in this hotel.
our room was very good and we had the chance to have a connectin room (a smaller one but adequate) for our children. we appreciated very much he park surrounding the hotel with the swimming pool and the tennis court which are close but at the same time far from the main building ...ideal for relaxing and at the same time avoiding noises while staying in the room.
perfect location for a relaxing stay, howver not very much to do in the surrounding area (which is not always necessarly a disadvantage..)
some previous comments stated that the building needs a refreshment. This might be true from some point of view. I do however believe that a little bit of 'dust' here and there makes this location even more attractive.
breakfast outside on a hot summer day is something to enjoy
staff very helpful and kind
only one negative remark : the water is the jacuzzi was dirty ..i mean really dirty ..
