“Would definitely return”

I loved this hotel. It was small enough to be friendly, but big enough to meet my needs. The restaurant food was excellent and the room spotlessly clean. The car park was very secure, it was convenient for the motorway, making for an easy onward journey to the channel tunnel. I would definitely come back next year. For the people who have said that the garden is untidy - this is the French countryside, not a manicured apartment in the middle of Nice! It was beautiful.

“Nice stay and diner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2010

Very nice hotel. Nice location. Very good restaurant. We have stayed for 2 night and had 2 dinners. They should just give the room a more modern look otherwise it was good.

“Pleasant stop over in quiet countryside, nice garden.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

We stopped over with our children and had adjacent rooms. The staff were adequately friendly and helpful. What's good here is plenty of pleasant outdoor space with a welcome garden where the kids could let off steam, a small playground too, a river (mind any toddlers) and ducks. Sadly the garden is rather neglected but clearly has been fantastic when cared for. There is a large terrace for enjoying a drink or meal. The restaurant was very good with a variety of reasonable menus and a children's menu. Clearly a lot of locals come to use the restaurant as well as the many international hotel guests. We were recommended a very good wine. The rooms were ordinary but pleasant and the decor is country house style and a bit faded in places.
Some reviewers mention the noisy river. I rather like the sound of a waterfall myself - but if you don't, you need to ask for a room at the front. Shame they don't mention it on their website so you can choose. We were there at a weekend and there was minimal traffic - a combine harvester or two. We found it peaceful and relaxing. It was rather hot when we were there and there is no air conditioning or fan.
overall a pleasant stay and I'd be happy to return.

“Slightly underwhelmed, as expectations were to high”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

I stayed at this hotel on our weekend trip to Champagne. Originally, I chose this hotel after reading all nice reviews at tripadvisor (and not finding a descent option in Troyes or Reims).

After reading the reviews, I expected nice rooms, beautiful garden and excellent dinner.

Garden: In one respect, the garden, it was not disappointing at all: it is indeed quite beautiful, green with geese and ducks roaming around.

Rooms: Though we booked a room in the annex and a room in the main bld, we were told that they have only rooms in the annex left (and given the corresponding discount). The rooms in the annex were quite different: one on the 1st floor was very small (at least for a newly build building), with no view, and not very nice overall and the one on the ground floor was much larger and brighter. The tub in one of the bathrooms was cleaned well enough, with some hair remaining on the floor, that's not nice. Overall (averaging over the two rooms), not more than OK rooms for a budget hotel. I suspect that rooms in the main building are nice (otherwise, I would not expect that high ratings on the website and probably it is worth paying extra 10 euros for that; though I do not know)

Dining: As there were 4 of us, we tasted 3 different meals and the quality was variable. I was given some quite rubbery duck with pretty cold pasta, hardly fine dining. Overall, some food was OK, some bad. Nothing exciting. Admittedly, price is not too high but still I think the value is pretty bad. Breakfast was pretty standard, not much to say about it. Wine was OK.

The staff is friendly and professional, no criticism on this side.

Overall, considering that the hotel is located in the middle of nowhere, I think there should be better options out there. Still, overall, it was not that bad experience but it could be considerably better.

“suitable for a stop en-route to Italy or Germany, be careful!”

I picked this hotel because of the location e.g. a suitable mid way point home from Germany and because of the web site which makes the hotel sound like a haven of tranquility. The hotel is nothing like the description on the web site. The main building is not too bad with a restaurant that provided a nice evening meal.
Our allocated room was in the annex! I probably should have realised at the point they mentioned an annex, when have you ever stayed in a nice annex?
The walls were paper thin, and I mean paper thin, fellow travellers didn't need to snore, we could hear them breathing. The carpets were stained and dirty, the bathroom was small and grotty and the stairs up to the first floor room were tight and dangerous when carrying a case.
There is a dearth of nice places to stay on the journey through France, I thought I had found a solution in Le Clos de Mutigny, but sadly not beware of the annex!
