The hotel dates to 1699, and it seems as if some of the decor does, too. We booked six nights demi-pension with friends on the friends' recommendation. Their description was that the well-worn appearance of the hotel was an aspect of its charm. After two nights in a room with a carpet that smelled foul. we asked to change rooms. The staff very accommodatingly moved us to a different room that felt and smelled cleaner. Still the well-worn carpet, wallpaper and furnishings did not seem charming, but merely old.
The demi-pension menu does not change much, so every night we had to decide which of the repeat dishes we wanted again. The staff accommodated a non-meat-eating diner (advised weeks in advance) with something, but often there was only one possibility per course. The food was heavy and stayed with one for the entire night. And 11 euros seemed exorbitant for a 25 cl pitcher of very ordinary wine.
On a positive note, the staff members were especially kind, pleasant, warm and ingratiating. We ended up wishing the staff would buy up the establishment, refurbish it, and bring it up to a standard where the quality of the establishment and the restaurant matched the excellence of the staff.
