“What a disappointment...Never again”

We went there to celebrate my father's 70th birthday. I had booked three rooms as well as a table in the restaurant a month in advance and explained the reason of our stay. We arrived at 6 pm and after having checked in (the receptionist was very helpful) we wanted to have a drink in the bar. First disappointment: on the pictures of the hotel, you see nice fire in the two fireplaces that comprises the bar and in spite of the fact that it was already rather cold outside (end october) none of them were working. Just two big holes.... We sat down and the barman came and cleaned the table for some cups and stuff without a hello or anything... He returned to the bar and just stood there without coming back asking us for what we wanted to drink in spite of the fact that there were very few people in the bar at that moment. After 10 minutes waiting we decided to go to our rooms and have our drink there instead. The rooms were OK, but noting more than that - definitely not corresponding to a 4 star hotel. We had decided to meet in the bar at 8 pm for a drink and this time the barman came but there were still no fire in the fireplaces. At 8h.30 pm the eight of us went into the restaurant and again what a disappointment: On the pictures you see big candelabras on each table but in reality there were only some small tee candlelights. Secondly, it was so nosy and completely packed - absolutely overcrowded and extremely hot. You could really see that they had placed much more tables than what should normally be in such a room which is supposed to be a select restaurant.... We went to our table and then we sat there for 20 MINUTES before they came and asked us what we wanted to drink. We observed that there were not enough staff to serve all these people (apparently there was a seminar that day). We started to be a bit fed up but well it was too late to go somewhere else. We ordered the menu to 72 Euros per person which was just OK, absolutely not what one could expect for such a price...The staff was so busy that it took hours before we were served and they did not have much time to refill our glasses. One positive thing was that the staff was kind and smiling once we managed to speak to them. After dinner we passed the bar but again it looked so depressing - still no fire in either of the fireplaces - that we decided once again to go to our rooms for a drink. Then when I wanted to take a shower before going to bed again a surprise: almost no hot water in the shower. It took me 10 minutes to get a little bit of hot water which arrived on and off... At 6 am some clients started to shower, which is perfectly understandable, but we could hear all the noise from the water in our room so needless to say that we did not sleep very well. Breakfast was nice and served in an old room having nice soft background music and the staff was very helpful, efficient and kind.
Globally speaking my feeling is that the hotel is more than understaffed and badly managed and that it should absolutely not belong to the Small Luxoury Hotels of the World and does not at all deserve 4 stars... My hobby is to visit and stay in 4 and 5 stars hotel and I have been staying in many fantastic places thus having a certain experience. As somebody mentioned: it only has the prices of the 4 stars. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and needless to say that we will not return.

“expensive yes: luxurious no”

Externally the hotel looks grand. There are some gardens in front of the hotel which externally is itself impressive. There is a small swimming pool. The village itself offers nothing.. The room was large and looked out over the garden. There was free wifi which only worked near the door due to the thickness of the walls I suppose. There was a very small TV which only showed French channels. I don't think that the room had been refurbished since it opened. It certainly looked very tired with uncomfortable chairs and unpleasant looking blue carpet. The bathroom was very poor with a slightly dirty bath, a separate toilet with plastic seat, and minimal shower gels etc. If you are on the 1st floor you can her people walking about above. The reception staff were pleasant. There was one person serving at the bar so was somewhat overwhelmed by demands for pre dinner drinks. We were shown to our table but not made welcome. The water didn't arrive and the waiter had to be reminded of our order. The restaurant was very very over priced. Starters were over €20 and the mains at €35. Neither were exceptionally good. The wine list arrived in a huge book which was mostly blank pages and contained very little under €50. There are many good restaurants in Burgundy. This is not one. I couldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

“Fine, but overpriced”

The hotel is very nice from the outside, and the rooms are comfortable and roomy, although could do with a bit of an update in terms of decor. Staff were very friendly and helpful while we were there, didn't have any problems with them at all, contrary to other reviews.
But the thing I couldn't get over was the price of food and drink - it was truly extortionate for what you got - eat somewhere else!!!

“unfortunate waste of a lovely place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 March 2011

We stayed in the hotel one night renting 2 rooms and ate in the fine dining restaurant.
Good point: upgraded, nice bar and lounge, lovely exterior of the old abbey

Bad points: poor upkeep, decor dated and worn out in the rooms , carpets with bleach stains, cracks in room doors so that from hallway you can see right into rooms. Materials seemed cheap, doors to bedroom and bathroom have no latch and do not stay closed. No information in room for reference, gross looking blankets on beds.

Restaurant: beautiful dining hall, totally empty. Only one other table taken during our meal. Personal hygene of server very poor as she smelled strongly and had greasy hair. Lax and unattentive service even though there were 3 people present to serve 5 guests. The other table, after waiting for an extensive period of time, had to get up to serve his own wine.
There was sand in the scallops appetizer. A hair was found in the main course, an excuse was given that it was just a root of a mushroom and they even proposed to bring the same plate back to the table to be finished. This was, of course, refused so the entire table sat with empty dishes for 15 to 20 minutes waiting for the replacement dish to be served. No adjustment was made to the final bill and management did not address the situation even when requested on check out. We were told it is not the hotel's policy to provide refunds.

Oh and the "swiming pool" is an outdoor stone bog. with roots, weeds and fish.

Actually, the swimming pool is in the garden, behind a hedge to preserve as much of tranquillity…
That’s why you do not have seen our unique pool open for summer…

We hope you will keep full confidence to the Château de Gilly and we hope to welcoming you again in Burgundy.

“Magnificent castle close to burgundy wineyards”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2010

This hotel is located inside a beautiful castle in a quiet village, a mere 3 km away from Burgundy wineyards and 15 mn road from Dijon. The building is large and magnificient, well preserved and decorated with style. It is surrounded by french gardens and border by nice river so there is place for a nice walk. Rooms are spacious and luxurious, staff very friendly and always ready to help, and restaurant offer typical local cuisine. Of course the place is expensive but it is really a wonderful place for a romantic weekend of a family event.
