Stayed here for 2 nights in early July. Booked it via their own website. We flew to Bergerac airport, hired a car and drove the 20 odd miles to Le Manoir. First impressions are very favourable, beautiful old manor house with a nearby annexe (also with rooms), right on the Dordogne river.
We were met at reception by the owner who is a charming, courteous man. He showed us 2 rooms. The first, overlooking the river was in the main house. It was quite small and although it had a river view, the window was quite high. The 2nd room - in the annexe overlooking the gardens - was superb.
It was huge, with good a/c, door to a small terrace next to the gardens with sunloungers already set up. The decor was tasteful - yellows and dark wood with a large picture window, good quality comfy bed. The bathroom was also excellent with good bathrobes and large freestanding bath. Only slight niggle, at these prices I would have expected some more upmarket toiletries but there are people starving in this world so it was not disastrous (Hermes please!)
There is an tangible atmosphere of enormous relaxation about the whole place. There is an (admittedly cold) outdoor pool with sunloungers and just behind there are trees with the river roaring away in the background. The main house has an intimate, clubbable bar with a wide range of champagnes, library and those superbly maintained gardens.
There are two restaurants to choose from although the food comes from the same kitchen - an informal brasserie and a more haute restaurant. We had the half board option which gives you access to the 45 euro menu in the main restaurant. There are also 55 and 70 euro menus if you want to pay the extra. The food was very, very good with lots of little freebie amouse bouches and extra courses - very good maitre'd. The place had a michelin star and although the chef has recently changed we felt it would have no problem keeping it. Eating al fresco on the terrace overlooking the backlit gardens made you feel good to be alive. The cuisine is quite rich in butter and cream however so don't expect just grilled fish with couscous!
Breakfast was mainly ok - wonderful rich coffee - but there was an extra charge for eggs and the ham was awful, like a cheap packet ham full of water, let themselves down slightly here. There was also an ancient, rickety display case where the cheese/ham/yoghurst etc were kept which just didn't have the quality you'd expect. Le Pigonnet in Aix has a whole ham on the bone at breakfast where guests just help themselves. Strange thing was, although we had eggs both mornings they did not appear on our bill ! maybe the policy has been abandoned.....
Overall though, an excellent, well run, relaxing place - just go, it is a gem.
