We stayed at the Le Manoir De Bellerive for a week in June 2007 and found the entire experience delightful - the location is excellent for touring the region. Our room in the annex was superb - excllent shower and very relaxing. we used the pool once and found it extremely clean and inviting - The food and service was excellent - an excellent experience in every way.

“Outstanding place”

Stayed here for 2 nights in early July. Booked it via their own website. We flew to Bergerac airport, hired a car and drove the 20 odd miles to Le Manoir. First impressions are very favourable, beautiful old manor house with a nearby annexe (also with rooms), right on the Dordogne river.
We were met at reception by the owner who is a charming, courteous man. He showed us 2 rooms. The first, overlooking the river was in the main house. It was quite small and although it had a river view, the window was quite high. The 2nd room - in the annexe overlooking the gardens - was superb.
It was huge, with good a/c, door to a small terrace next to the gardens with sunloungers already set up. The decor was tasteful - yellows and dark wood with a large picture window, good quality comfy bed. The bathroom was also excellent with good bathrobes and large freestanding bath. Only slight niggle, at these prices I would have expected some more upmarket toiletries but there are people starving in this world so it was not disastrous (Hermes please!)
There is an tangible atmosphere of enormous relaxation about the whole place. There is an (admittedly cold) outdoor pool with sunloungers and just behind there are trees with the river roaring away in the background. The main house has an intimate, clubbable bar with a wide range of champagnes, library and those superbly maintained gardens.
There are two restaurants to choose from although the food comes from the same kitchen - an informal brasserie and a more haute restaurant. We had the half board option which gives you access to the 45 euro menu in the main restaurant. There are also 55 and 70 euro menus if you want to pay the extra. The food was very, very good with lots of little freebie amouse bouches and extra courses - very good maitre'd. The place had a michelin star and although the chef has recently changed we felt it would have no problem keeping it. Eating al fresco on the terrace overlooking the backlit gardens made you feel good to be alive. The cuisine is quite rich in butter and cream however so don't expect just grilled fish with couscous!
Breakfast was mainly ok - wonderful rich coffee - but there was an extra charge for eggs and the ham was awful, like a cheap packet ham full of water, let themselves down slightly here. There was also an ancient, rickety display case where the cheese/ham/yoghurst etc were kept which just didn't have the quality you'd expect. Le Pigonnet in Aix has a whole ham on the bone at breakfast where guests just help themselves. Strange thing was, although we had eggs both mornings they did not appear on our bill ! maybe the policy has been abandoned.....
Overall though, an excellent, well run, relaxing place - just go, it is a gem.

“Extremely disappointed”

As I was undergoing a 3 week motorbike trip with my wife around France and we had to cross the Perigord region, we decided to spend 1 night at Le Manoir de Bellerive at end of August 2006.

We booked the hotel directly. The receptionist upon booking was quite nice but when ask my CC number she requested our security number too (which is totally illegal, at least in France). For information, hotels don't need security numbers when used for guarantee of payment.
The hotel was quite easy to find as it is on a main road and enclosed in a really beautiful surrounding.
Due to the previous reviews obtain on this website, we were confident to live a great experience. Too bad ! Far away from it !!!!

First of all, as we arrived, we were greeted by a receptionist who took our details (again !). She offered to show us 2 different rooms. The first room was on the 1st floor, and was extremely small and dark (even the receptionist looked extremely embarrassed by having to show us this room !!!). Then and after having seen our disgusted faces, she shown us an other room on the 2nd floor. This room was really nice and bright, the bathroom was beatifully decorated and equipped. We decided to take this room and wnet back to bring our luggage.

When we came down, we were greeted by the owner of this family owned hotel (very nice chap !). He first offered my wife to carry her luggage (as their is no lift in the hotel !!!). After 2 minutes of conversation, he walked away. We thought that someone will come to help for luggage but noone ever came and were left in the lobby (don't propose if you don't do it, Mister Owner !!!!).

Even if it is nice to be proposed a restaurant reservation, I beleive that the staff was very pushy on that matter. In fact, they offered us 6 times to book a table at the restaurant and seemed annoyed when declined each time!!! (we just wanted to go out for the evening).

If you can, use the pool (safe for Kids) but when we went it was rather dirty.

We spent a very good night even if the hotel is about 150 metres from a TGV railway and can get very disturbing early the morning (a rather unexpected wakeup call !).

On the morning of departure, we decided to get delivered 2 glasses of fresh Orange juice to our bedroom. I called reception but I felt that I was disturbing them. When asked for 2 OJ, she told me that it was included in the breakfast (but not in my rate). We just wanted 2 OJ and not the full bfast !!! When understood my request, she agreed but I had to ask for the price. She reply that she didn't know and sound extremely annoyed by this request (who's paying at the end of the day !!!) She rudely said that I will know the price on checkout (Unbeleivable !!!).

Even if we were only 3 couples in the hotel, they couldn't remember my name and find my bill on check out. We had to wait 15 minutes to pay. The bill was £110.00 for the room and 2 x £4.50 for 2 x 8oz glass of orange juice (Whoa !!!! Certainly no needs to comment on that !!!!!!).

Overall, I do not recommand this hotel at all (even if their website is smahing but will you false expectations). If you go in the region, I stongly recommand to go 15 miles futher east towards Sarlat where you will find the most amazing villages and hotels.

“Fabulous”

We were only here 1 night, passing through the Dordogne. We should have stayed longer! Wonderful hotel with super service and good rooms, even at the entry price level. The main chef was unwell when we were there but the 2nd chef prepared a limited menu which although not billed as 'gastronomique' was excellent. Even the rather expensive G&T's did not detract from our feeling of being somewhere special.

“A special jewel of a place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2005

My family of four just returned from an 8 day stay at the Manoir de Bellerive in the Dordogne. We all adored this place.

LOCATION...it is within 25 minutes in every direction of all things worth seeing in the Dordogne--Sarlat, Belves, Cadouin, Beynac, Les Eyzies, etc. It is a perfect "launch point" without having to move every night.

ROOMS...we had two adults and two children. We put our children in their own room (it was just down the hall from ours--we felt perfectly safe with them down the hall--it was such an intimate hotel, it feels like being in your own home). The rooms are deliciously decorated--not all that large, but very comfortable and elegant. The bathrooms are lovely, modern, clean, cozy robes provided. Don't count on the hair dryers for any heavy duty drying! There were also towel warmers which we used a lot as we would hand wash some garments and dry them quickly that way.

SERVICE...The hotel is owned by a husband and wife who are omni-present, making sure every detail is perfect. There are two concierges, Sophie and Charlotte who you get to know intimately. They can plan everything for you.

POOL...a lovely spot. European pools tend to be simple (not the elaborate affairs in many US resorts). This was not a fancy pool, but in a lovely setting by the river; quiet and restful.

BREAKFAST...the very best part. The most charming white table clothed; Herend China, chocolate croissant and hot rich coffee setting on a terrace overlooking the river. A perfect spot and perfect beginning to each day.

FOOD....The hotel boasts a very fancy restaurant with a Michelin star--we did not take advantage of it as our children are very picky eaters, and the experience would have been wasted on them. The waiters brag about how wonderful it is, and based on our other experiences there, the restaurant is probably fabulous.
