Being mid-way between Sarlat and Bergerac this is ideally situated for exploring the region. The small chateau gives the impression of almost being an English coiuntry house with a pretty flower filled garden. Although it is right beside the Dordogne river you cannot really see it from ground level which is a pity.
The "Privelige" room we had was on the first floor of the chateau (no lift for those higher up) and looked on to the garden. It was spacious, well decorated and had an extremely pretty bathroom which was not altogether satisfactory. It had a bath and a hand held shower with a very small screen which was ineffective and resulted in my husband spraying the entire bathroom each time he used it! The air conditioning was a bonus at it was extremely hot while we were there. It would have been impossible to have slept with the windows open as the entire property was heavily populatd by mosquitos in the afternoons and evenings. This meant we were unable to use the pool as on the one occasion we tried we were eaten alive by them.
The hotel, as previously advised, has recently changed hands and I would agree that this probably has made no, or little difference, except I would suggest to the restaurant. We had a rather disappointing dinner off the 48euro menu, with no choices and the feeling that the chef had used the cheapest ingredients he could find - eg eggs to start, very over cooked shoulder of lamb as a main course and strawberries for pudding, all interspersed with various "freebies" of "froth" in various guises. (We also spent most of the evening swatting mossies!) We ate in the bistro one night and again I though my main course of very fatty belly of pork with tiny potatoes was not up to scratch. (No other choice of meat) Breakfast on the terrace at 18euros was very expensive and although served by charming staff was ordinary.
The reception staff were not particularly forthcoming. They made little effort to begin with but after we had stayed 4 nights they became rather more approachable. With both restaurants being shut on the Monday night of our stay we asked for suggestions of where to go to eat and they seemed reluctant to recommend anywhere. Eventually they did send us to a very pretty little village, Tremolat, which we enjoyed.
Overall we enjoyed our stay as it was a superb base from which to explore the Dordogne area. Also as it was so hot, 30 degrees plus, it was a joy to get back to our air conditioned room, although a shame we didn't use the swimming pool. We did though find it did not come up to our expectations from the various reviews, especially the restaurant which we did not know had lost its star. We felt it was expensive for what it offered.
