“Beautiful hotel away from the tourist rush”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2010

We stayed at the hotel for one night and liked it very much. It is a rural hotel and very small, in a historic building around a small courtyard. Our room was very beautiful with a wood ceiling, a comfortable bed and spacious bathroom (we were only a bit irritated by the fact that the bed had wheels and rolled away if you got into bed too quickly ...). Even though we arrived very late, we were able to have dinner at the restaurant. The food was very good, but not cheap - however, they emphasize on local cuisine and served an excellent goat's meat stew. Breakfast buffet the next day was also fine, with regional food such as goat's cheese or gofio (local cereal) on offer - a bit more fresh fruit would have been nice. The hotel is a bit under-staffed, we had the impression that one young lady had to run reception and the restaurant single-handedly and seemed a bit stressed - however, she was friendly and helpful. So was everyone else we met. The only disadvantage to the hotel is that it is difficult to find and that there is no parking available nearby. We solved this by driving in front of the hotel and unloading our luggage, then parking quite a long distance away. Aguimes is a beautiful town and really worth the visit.

“Lovely location - service and restaurant mediocre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2010

We stayed here for 2 days after travelling to 2 other hotels in different parts of the island. The other hotels were fantastic,
Certainly the location is great - Aguimes is a lovely little town. When we arrived in our room we found it was not ready. That's OK - it happens! But when I went down to reception to ask if it could be finished the lady there handled it very badly - sighing and almost rolling her eyes at her colleague. I tried to explain (my Spanish unfortunately is not good) but she sighed that she didn't understand and swept upstairs meekly followed by me! She then did say that she hadn't realised it wasn't finished and sent the maid in to apologise - but we felt a slight Fawlty Towers moment! This was compounded by an indifferent meal in the hotel (we had heard the reviews that the restaurant was fantastic - it wasn't) At 10pm we had just finished our meal when the waitress informed us she was closing! We were the only guests there. The room was nice, the breakfasts were just adequate (strange little notices everywhere IE 'tomatoes' by the dish of tomatoes!!)...........but really it was the lack of welcome and warmth from the staff there. I'm surprised to hear it's used as a training hotel. It sounds as if we're very picky - we're not! We had a brilliant welcome at the other 2 places we stayed at. A lovely hotel - but the staff need training.

“Pleasant hotel in charming town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2009

We stayed here for one night on arrival in Gran Canaria, as it was easy to reach from the airport.
The hotel is full of character and is right in the centre of the pedestrianised old town, just yards from the church.
We had a room on the ground floor, which was comfortable, with excellent bedding. The only snag was that we had to keep the shutters shut so that passers-by couldn´t look in, but we were only there overnight, so it was hardly a problem.
The food at breakfast was fine, but I think the staff must have been in the very early stages of their training, as they didn´t seem to know about greeting people, or ensuring that food and utensils that had run out were replenished, but stood around unsmilingly looking rather like security guards Four of them stood inches away from me while I tried to wrest some water out of the hot water flask, without lifting a finger! A bit more training needed, please!
But we would recommend a stay here, and thought it was good value for 60 Euros.

“A little disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2008

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights at the end of a fortnight stay, The rest of my stay was in the AC in Las Palmas-see earlier comments.
Having spent a few days in the Aguimes area sightseeing we decided, on the spur of the moment, and having read good things in the Lonely Planet Guide to finish our stay here.

The hotel itself is a converted Camel stable, and also part of the training school for hotel staff throughout the Island. The building itself is a charming place and one ot the nicer and more original places i have stayed at, it is actually a really nice building.
The downside-well the room was fairly small and basic, and worst of all i found the bed small and uncomfortable.
Also, being on the ground floor we had a bit of noise from the kids playing around the lane-not rowdiness, just kids being kids, but combined with the bed didn't make for a good sleep!

The biggest disappointment was the restaurant. We had read really good reviews and were looking forward to something a bit special, however we were the only guests eating, and someone actually had to go and fetch the chef, he wasn't in the kitchen and it did take some time for him to be found.
Perhaps he didn't want to work that night because our meal was pretty poor fare, to be honest. It wasn't the worst meal i have ever had but was, shall we say, totally mediocre.
Breakfast was nothing special either and we gave it a miss on our second day, chosing to eat by the plaza.
So, would i stay here again? Well the opportunity arose when i stayed in Gran Canaria again this year and whilst visiting Aguimes-which is a lovely little town-my wife asked if i wanted to stay for the night. We discussed it and both agreed that once was probably enough.
A shame really as the building itself is a little gem.

  • Liked — charming building in a delightful old town
  • Disliked — disappointing meal. room a little spartan.
