“Nice boutique hotel - with glitches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

There was no way under the sun we would go into a "tourist factory" - as my wife calls the enormous hotels with buffet meals that put a Zara sale to shame. After a bit of research, and discarding enticing guest houses in the middle of the island we ended up in Los Camellos.

The hotel boasts looks so good that tour groups are regularly taken inside to admire a traditional Canary house. The Agüimes Cathedral is 100 meters away. The locals sit out to eat on the main square of the village, also about 100 meters away.

So what not to like? Well, the double bed was about 135 cm wide, not ideal for a romantic getaway. And inexplicably several items on the breakfast in the otherwise nice restaurant smelled and tasted foul.

Not perfect, but it still beats tourist factories hands down.

“Quite unique”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

This was just an overnight stay as we were on our way home to Fuerteventura, so we wanted something fairly close to the airport. We arrived late and to our horror, found the impressive wooden doors firmly closed! Luckily, our taxi driver knew what to do and took us to the local police station, where there was an envelope in our name, containing keys to the main doors and our room. What a relief! This should have been pointed out to us by the travel agents (Alpha rooms.com). The hotel itself makes this arrangement quite clear.

The hotel is a series of rooms set around a courtyard with palms. Our room was welcoming, with highly polished floors and wooden ceiling, comfortable beds, spacious wardrobes and a very old fashion styled telephone! The bathroom was spacious and well appointed.

Breakfast was a self service buffet, which while not as vast a choice as some large hotels, was perfectly adequate and pleasant.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and if we were to spend longer in Gran Canaria, we would gladly stay here.

“Beautiful hotel away from the tourist rush”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2010

We stayed at the hotel for one night and liked it very much. It is a rural hotel and very small, in a historic building around a small courtyard. Our room was very beautiful with a wood ceiling, a comfortable bed and spacious bathroom (we were only a bit irritated by the fact that the bed had wheels and rolled away if you got into bed too quickly ...). Even though we arrived very late, we were able to have dinner at the restaurant. The food was very good, but not cheap - however, they emphasize on local cuisine and served an excellent goat's meat stew. Breakfast buffet the next day was also fine, with regional food such as goat's cheese or gofio (local cereal) on offer - a bit more fresh fruit would have been nice. The hotel is a bit under-staffed, we had the impression that one young lady had to run reception and the restaurant single-handedly and seemed a bit stressed - however, she was friendly and helpful. So was everyone else we met. The only disadvantage to the hotel is that it is difficult to find and that there is no parking available nearby. We solved this by driving in front of the hotel and unloading our luggage, then parking quite a long distance away. Aguimes is a beautiful town and really worth the visit.

“Lovely location - service and restaurant mediocre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2010

We stayed here for 2 days after travelling to 2 other hotels in different parts of the island. The other hotels were fantastic,
Certainly the location is great - Aguimes is a lovely little town. When we arrived in our room we found it was not ready. That's OK - it happens! But when I went down to reception to ask if it could be finished the lady there handled it very badly - sighing and almost rolling her eyes at her colleague. I tried to explain (my Spanish unfortunately is not good) but she sighed that she didn't understand and swept upstairs meekly followed by me! She then did say that she hadn't realised it wasn't finished and sent the maid in to apologise - but we felt a slight Fawlty Towers moment! This was compounded by an indifferent meal in the hotel (we had heard the reviews that the restaurant was fantastic - it wasn't) At 10pm we had just finished our meal when the waitress informed us she was closing! We were the only guests there. The room was nice, the breakfasts were just adequate (strange little notices everywhere IE 'tomatoes' by the dish of tomatoes!!)...........but really it was the lack of welcome and warmth from the staff there. I'm surprised to hear it's used as a training hotel. It sounds as if we're very picky - we're not! We had a brilliant welcome at the other 2 places we stayed at. A lovely hotel - but the staff need training.

“Pleasant hotel in charming town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2009

We stayed here for one night on arrival in Gran Canaria, as it was easy to reach from the airport.
The hotel is full of character and is right in the centre of the pedestrianised old town, just yards from the church.
We had a room on the ground floor, which was comfortable, with excellent bedding. The only snag was that we had to keep the shutters shut so that passers-by couldn´t look in, but we were only there overnight, so it was hardly a problem.
The food at breakfast was fine, but I think the staff must have been in the very early stages of their training, as they didn´t seem to know about greeting people, or ensuring that food and utensils that had run out were replenished, but stood around unsmilingly looking rather like security guards Four of them stood inches away from me while I tried to wrest some water out of the hot water flask, without lifting a finger! A bit more training needed, please!
But we would recommend a stay here, and thought it was good value for 60 Euros.
