Spent the weekend at the hotel booked in a Junior Suite. Initially, I was very pleased with the hotel's apperance, but looks can be deceiving. Check-in took longer than it should have given there were only a few guests. The receptionist that spoke almost no English and was busily taking phone reservations while checking me in without so much as an "excuse me".
We were very happy when we entered the room. The door opens into a living room with small bathroom (with shower), sofabed (not particularly comfy), coffee table, and kitchenette with electric tea pot, minibar fridge (poorly stocked and no indication of whether it was free or not), The bedroom was spacious with a nice wardrobe and a very ample bathroom with double sinks and a bathtub.
However, after the initial satisfaction, I was upset to see a large red stain on the bedspread. Then I noticed how many stains the carpet had. Then I saw the marks, dirt, stains on the walls. To sum it up, it was a 4 star room with 3 star upkeep. We asked to change rooms, but they were none available. The one good thing is that the foam mattress on the bed was extremely comfortable and separate airconditioners (living room and bedroom) kept the room well chilled.
Breakfast was the biggest disappointment. Part of the buffet was outdoors under a tent, and part of it was inside. If you sat inside, you had to go outside to get certain items and vice versa if you choose to sit on the terrace. However, the large dining room doors are open, allowing the flies and bees to come in at their leisure. I was appalled at the way the breakfast area was maintained and managed. Coffee from the machines was very bad. The one good thing is there was a HUGE selection (4 types of sausage, churros, eggs, cereal, bread, etc.), but I left most of the fruit and meats alone because of the flies. I was baffled that they had a coffee dispenser inside in the dining room, yet all the coffee cups were outside on the terrace.
I knew about the hotel's location away from Alicante and the beaches, so it wasn't a big deal, but it's definitely not a place to stay without a car. You don't have to pay for hotel parking (9eur per day) because you can park on the streets or in the golf course parking lot (150m away).
This hotel only has wifi in the lobby and some of the first floor. The rooms do have ethernet connections, but make sure to bring a cable.
I spent a wonderful week at the Melia Alicante (4star) in a The Level service room for just a few more euros and had an absolutely incredible stay...good service, the option to eat breakfast in the buffet, the private lounge, or in my bedroom at no extra charge, etc. I expected this "4* Sup" property to really blow me away, but I was not pleased. The hotel is definitely a "resort" with buffet food, aerobics classes, etc., but besides the golf course, I don't see any particular attraction.
Save a few bucks and stay at the NH or AC, or spend a few more and go big at the Melia waterfront hotel.
Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool, but you'll also get a good view of hundreds of greenhouses...
