“incredibly low”

We stayed at the Cortijo Soto Real for the first time. It was highly recommended by AE Centurion as a five luxury property. It was isolated in the midde of no where and it is hard to see anyone and its is dark in the hallway.
We were given a suite, but it was not 5 stars treatment.
In the Soto Real, we needed to kill all the insects, ants and mosquitos in the room and bathroom. I decided not to take a bath as the tub had dead insects. I thought the room had not been used for some time, but the hotel said the room was recently used by other guests just a day before. It sure did not seem like it was used. Other hotels will prepare the room with the proper materials such a an electric VAPE for insects.
We made sure all the windows were closed, but then the bathroom did not have an exhaust fan for the steam from a shower. It was slippery, there was no carpet or rug, and there weren't hooks or enough towel bars to hang towels and bathrobes. It was not a easy experience in the bathroom.
The staff were also lightweight in cleaning the room. The items in the bathroom were not replaced, soap, loofah scrub, tissues, etc. A second guest bathroom was not attended to at all, nor were the ashtrays and candles attended. They did not refresh the room with drinking water. There were also huge cracks on the wall.

When sleeping at night, the temperature dropped and we could not find a blanket in the closet or anywhere in the room.

The Soto Real is supposed to be a lux property recommended by Centurion, and is member of the SLH group. Soto Real were less than the luxury standard in others and this is unacceptable to stay there. It does not meet the 5 star or luxury standards.
The property is an estate and looks grand, but is cutting short standards.

The breakfast was not very fresh except the juice which we had to continuely ask for.

We believe its not of value and we do not recommend the place, its is waste of money and time to get there.

“Incredibly relaxing”

We booked a superior room. This turned out to be very spacious, with a huge shower and a massive bed. The bathroom toiletries were also numerous and of a high quality.

Unless you have been it is difficult to put into words the attraction of this hotel. Its not a slick, plush hotel although it is authentically furnished to a very high standard. The staff have an informal air about them while still being very professional and are very keen to make sure you enjoy your stay.

One reviewer said it was like staying at your own country estate and certainly for the two days that we were there with no other guests that was exactly how it felt. I have never before had a hotel with such extensive facilities at my exclusive disposal!

For a hotel the horses available to ride are of a much higher standard than are usually found. Gorgeous Andalusions who are well looked after. It is a shame for us Brits that the yard manager did not speak English as he struck me as quite an accomplished rider.

The only thing we were disappointed with was the difference in standard of food between the a la carte menu and the set menu. The food from the the a la carte was of a very high quality and only served to highlight that the food off the set menu (which would be the only menu on that particular evening) was average, particularly the desserts which had a Sara Lee look about them. A 5 star hotel should provide top quality food and if it were not for this disappointment we would have rated the hotel as 'excellent'.

We definitely hope to return.

“This was very relaxing”

Welcome was very warm when we arrived. The staff is very friendly and nothing is to much for them to help you.

Food is very good, compared with this area of Spain. The headwaiter proposed some very good plates.

The rooms are very nice and big, well decorated in the typical Andalusian style.
We also visited Jerez: the winecellers are a must. And in Seville we recommend the tour with the horse carriage.

They also offered some activities: we took the quad tour and the horseback riding. It is fun and you can explore the estate which is very big.
We really enjoyed our stay.

“Beyond 5 Stars”

My wife and I just returned from a 10 day stay at Soto Real. As suggested by other reviewers, the stay was beyond a 5 star hotel experience. The entire atmosphere is one of one's own private spanish country estate. The sevice was outstanding. The room we stayed in was superb with more closet space than we had clothes, and the best shower that we have had in any hotel that we ever have stayed in. The hotel and the grounds are beautiful and meticulously maintained.

The hour drive from Seville was fine for us - we found the cultural aspects of Seville to be outstanding but as are most cities, it is crowded and difficult to find a parking space. We were delighted to return to Soto Real after a day in Seville. We would suggest staying at Soto Real and asking the hotel to arrange a tour of Seville rather than driving into the city. Obviously more expensive but well worth it.

It is unfortunate that there are so few hotels like this in the world.

“Lovely hotel - but didn't expect to come home in agony with fractured ribs!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2006

My wife and I and 2 friends booked the Magic of Andalucia package for 4 nights and after the 1st night we arranged to do the horse riding included in the package. After about half an hour in the training ring my horse suddenly bolted and I was thrown off and landed first on a post then on the floor. I couldn't move and after being taken to the local hospital then the main one at Seville they x-rayed me and sent it was probably bruising and I should be OK in a few days. I couldn’t sleep and my holiday was ruined. When I got back home I was still in agony so I had an x-ray in a UK hospital and they found I had fractured 2 ribs. I have only just recovered after a painful and very inconvenient 8 weeks. The manager kindly provided myself and my party with a free meal and a bottle of cava but when I got back and realised the extent of the damage I wrote and advised the manager that I was concerned about the way they managed the horse riding activity especially from a health and safety perspective - the tutor could not speak English (in my view they should provide teachers who speak the guests language); they did not hold the reigns in front during the training (if they had, perhaps they might have controlled the horse); there were vans driving close by the training area (one of them drove right up at exactly the point my horse threw me off). I also now have a permanent fear of riding horses. I told the manager that I felt a free meal and bottle of cava was inadequate compensation for the great pain, ruined holiday, and ongoing inconvenience, stress and anxiety that this has caused me but I have not heard from him since.

  • Liked — The comfort, excellent facilities and the friendly helpful staff
  • Disliked — In my view the failings in their health and safety for their horse riding - and lack of offer of proper compensation
  • Tips/Secrets — Be very careful if you take the horse riding option
