We stayed at this charming hotel for the 2nd time (our third visit to the village) and I was slightly reluctant to write a review as we don't want too many people to know about it - they might not have availability the next time we want to stay! - but then I decided not to be so selfish.
Posada La Plaza is a small hotel in a village called Canillas De Albaida - a white village in the mountains, East of Malaga - approx 1 hours drive. We arranged a taxi with the hotel this time - the return trip was 120 euro's (taxi's from the airport are approx 80 euro's one way). Hiring a car is a must if you haven't been to the area before to ensure you explore with ease. Cars cannot get into the centre near the hotel so be prepared whether travelling by taxi or a hire car to have a little walk (5 mins) with your suitcases when you arrive.
The views from the hotel and the village are stunning with mountains all around and the sea in the far distance. A National Park is on the doorstep and the small town of Competa (where they make Moscatel wine) is a 45 minute walk away through beautiful countryside complete with flora and fauna including avocado and olive trees.
Canillas is very quiet and typically Spanish despite quite a few British living here (they all speak Spanish). The streets are very steep and sensible shoes are a must- but oh so worth it for the views!
The hotel is owned and run by Gustavo Romero- as is the excellent restaurant across the Plaza where you have breakfast (cereals, bread, cheese, ham, olive oil and jams, orange juice and tea/coffee) when staying in the hotel. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day except for Wednesday's and the food is excellent - fresh local produce. There are other restaurants in the village (4) but in our opinion this is the best.
The hotel rooms are rustic and charming - very clean and with the all important air conditioning (much needed during our stay) . There is an honesty bar in a sitting area of the hotel which is stocked with water, beer, wine and soft drinks, tea and coffee making facilities are also available along with a selection of books and board games to borrow. The hotel reception is generally open between 9am and 2pm and you have a key for the outer door for when it's not. There is a jacuzzi on the roof terrace and a few chairs and sunbeds.Towels for sunbathing can be provided. In the hotter months, the village swimming pool is also open to the public. It costs 3 euro's per adult for use of the pool and an extra euro for a sunbed. There is also a bar area (where they serve snacks) and if you just want to go here and not the pool there is no admission fee.
If you want a "get away from it all " relaxing break or a stop off on your way to another part of Spain - this is the place for you. If you are feeling more energetic they are some superb walks and the hotel can arrange walking holidays and bird watching if this is your thing.
