“A peaceful country retreat”

Ballylickey is the well kept secret of West Cork. My husband and I stayed at this guesthouse for two nights last week. We were looking to stay somewhere different away from numerous commercial and look-alike hotels. The view over Bantry bay and the mountains beyond are breathtaking, and the gardens are simply wonderful.

We opted for a room in the house with views looking over the bay, which was spacious and decorated with an authentic country charm. We really enjoyed our breakfast in the dining room of the house, and it was a nice touch to have the son of the owner take our order and offer to book any restaurants for the evening.

All in all, we had an amazing time, and we hope to be back soon when we visit Ireland again.

“Isolated beauty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2011

This guesthouse is full of charm. The gardens are magnificent. The staff are really helpful and friendly. The owners met us on arrival and couldn't do enough for us. We had small children with us and they helped us to make things very comfortable for them. The pool was heated and available for us to use- we had a fantastic time, and loved the breakfasts. We can't wait to go back.

“Ballylickey is what it is”

Read with amusement the preceeding review of Ballylickey as i think my stay overlapped with the reviewers, quite simply Ballylickey house is what it is meaning that its a charming beautifully located period house with unrivalled views lovely gardens and pleasant helpful staff and yes the plumbing might be underwhelming but if you hang around for the hot water it does arrive so if you want every thing at the flick of a switch go to the comfort inn group if you prefer things at the pace of your souroundings i would recommend Ballylckey evert time.

“Faded Beauty”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

There are still signs that this was once a great manor house hotel. Parts of the grounds are quite striking, and the view from the rooms at the front of the house out to the bay are beautiful. But there it really ends. The rooms have been allowed to fall into 2 or 3 star status, a badly worn look. The beds are hard as rocks, the sheets cheap, and there is no hot water -- and I mean none -- in the morning. Breakfast is fine if impersonal. You'd be better served booking early to stay at Blair's Cove than stay here. Plus, if you are in the cottages very near the road (N 71), you get to hear the local highway traffic, especially when the roads are wet.

Room Tip: Insist on staying in the main house.

“Isolated, pleasant but overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

We stayed in Ballylickey for a night in July 2011. We had intended to stay for four nights but decided to move on after one.

The accommodation was spacious but had a feel of an old holiday camp. We stayed in one of the chalets on the grounds. The grounds were well kept and there is a heated outdoor pool. However I got the sence that the pool is only open on hot days , which are few & far between in the summer of 2011.

What also struck us was the lack of staff. We were checked in and the only person we saw was a young waitress who served breakfast and also checked us out.

All in all we felt that for the money we paid we felt that there are better options for quality accommodation in the area.

The place is located on the main Bantry to Killarney road. There is no option for an evening meal so we went next door for a nice meal but again was overpriced for what we got.

Finally we were travelling with an infant. Unfortunately there was no facilities available to cater for babies. As in cots or high chairs at breakfast.
