“Stylish and modern conference centre hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

We stayed at Vergilius as we were attending a wedding nearby, and this was suggested as a suitable hotel.

The appearance is indeed very different to the website: on arrival, we were unsure we had the right place, and one comparison of the exterior was to a power station. However, inside it is quite stylish/contemporary/minimalist, with bedroom corridors dimly lit by downlighters shining onto glass-mooted room numbers, for example.

The room was very modern and just about spacious enough: shower, etc. were all new, spotless, and very good. Our room looked out onto the outside pool through an openable window. All staff were pleasant and helpful enough, and one was really friendly.

The spa was actually quite decent - again, clinically clean and with good facilities. Perhaps because we were wedding guests, and it was off-season, we could use it for free even after checking out. The gym is all modern Technogym (a decent "proper" brand), and around 10 machines, so can't fault there. The pool is only 15m and unheated outside/closed in winter. I sneaked in at the start of October, and it was bracing!

We paid €80 a night as a discounted rate, Inc breakfast and spa. They did apparently try to charge almost everyone for Internet access, although no-one used it: watch out for this. There is wired access only - no wifi, and poor mobile coverage.

Overall, we were lacking for nothing in the Vergilius. But we wouldn't stay there ourselves on holiday, because while it is excellent as a conference/business centre, it is totally and utterly soulless as a holiday stop.

“A strange, ghostly hotel for business guests”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2009

This hotel isn't the same hotel you'll see on the official website. It's quite different. Aside from a lovely, clean bathroom and a very comfortable bed, I would say it's in need of an injection of life. It's devoid of any personality, and the people that stayed there when I was there were also a little ghostly and impersonal, and constantly stared!

Anyway, breakfast seemed different each day, with a variety of things on offer that were neither poor nor spectacular. The restaurant does have its own evening menu, though they also use the golf club nextdoor. I hope the staff are friendlier and more experienced.

The location is rubbish if you don't have a car. There's no public transport to speak of, so the taxis take great pleasure in ripping you off. The reception staff are a bit dazed and confused, though one lady seemed on the ball, though curt with it.

I didn't use the spa facilities, so can't comment on them, except to say that you have to pay extra.

“Bizarre”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2007

We stayed at the Hotel mid-week for 2 nights in the middle of September. A truly bizarre experience.

On arrival we were provided with the room key and, once we had dragged all of our luggage into the foyer of the hotel, were provided with the porter's trolley so that we could take ourselves and our luggage to the room. This is supposedly a 4* hotel?

We booked the Presidential Suite, on the basis that the map of room appeared to show a lounge and dining room downstairs with a spiral staircase leading to the bedroom upstairs. On checking in we discovered that the bedroom etc.. was downstairs and the spiral staircase led to a locked door which opened on to the roof top. No bedroom, not even a roof top garden or an observation deck, just a roof top. Did someone forget to build another storey? Truly bizarre.

After complaining, we were given a junior suite for half the price which was basically the same as the Presidential Suite minus the staircase to nowhere.

The hotel was like a ghost town, we rarely saw other guests (other than at breakfast) and the bar area was completely deserted throughout the evening. There were a number of older men with younger girls on their arms leaving the rooms throughout the early evening on the second day and an almost constant sound of stilettos up and down the corridor throughout the second night, but that was the only real human activity we heard or saw at the hotel.

The beds were very comfortable and the shower was quite an experience, which is obviously in deference to the clientele.

The staff spoke excellent english but were very young and inexperienced and very naive as to complain about guests in Italian within earshot of those guests (who incidently spoke Italian!). They were also very unprepared for dealing with a 3 year old guest. Having milk heated for a bottle of a night was very interesting, but at least it gave the barman something to do.

The Hotel does not have it's own restaurant, however, the Golf Club next door has a restaurant that offers, amongst other things, an antipasto buffet at 4 euro which is to die for. The food and ambience is excellent and the house wine is good value. Highly recommend it.

This hotel is for a certain clientele and families with children are not it.

“An ok stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2007

Just stayed for a week at this hotel. Very modern, advertised as a spa complex with the luxury of an outside unheated pool. Hotel was in a very small suburb within a housing estate. No local bus service to town. Very clean but very clinical, subdued lighting to the extent of it being dark and oppressive. No restaurant, no tea/coffee facilities during the day. Breakfast is included in price and is of a high standard, all food is fresh and beautifully served. Occasional bar at night depending which waiter about. (drinks quite expensive). Gym good, spa treatments expensive at around 50.00 for basic facial.
Can hire bikes from hotel and hotel has a small car for hire.
Taxi service from hotel good, but taxi journey to town can be either 7 euros or 17 euros depending on taxi driver!!
Staff lovely very helpful, English is very good.
