“Nice place to be, but not to come again”

We stayed here for 1 night and we agree the rooms and location is are nice, but we do agree with several people that the food is very expensive and portions are small. But the taste and preparation of the food was quite good.
The other problem is the water. I can understand that it is not like home, but this was bad. I ended up only washing my feet and there was also suddenly hot water, very hot water. Not very safe if your not expecting it any more.

“Great place to escape!”

The hotel is comfortable and Liz & Rob are friendly hosts. We stayed 3 nights to give us 2 full days to go walking.
Rannoch Moor is very isolated. Because of this, you will be reliant on the hotel for evening meals, which are a good standard but do not come cheap. Check menus in advance if this is a potential problem. We requested packed lunches and were a bit amazed to see £8 per lunch on the final bill - not good value for a roll, chocolate biscuit, an apple + bottle of water. I recommend you take you own picnic fodder if you can.

“2nd visit as good as the first”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

We were on a backpacking break and walked to the hotel from across the moor. This was the second time that this hotel had been in our route and it was just as good as the previous stay two years ago. Very small hotel but has a high standard of care and food. Our room was large with good views across the moor. The bath was slow to fill due to the private water supply and I noticed an earlier comment made that it should be priority to improve that ,but in the wilds of Scotland that is not possible, you dont get things like fast flowing clear water and tv reception in remote areas, inconvenient as it is.
We had an evening meal at the hotel and it was excellent, first class and plenty to eat. We did rack up the bill due to the whisky tasting - malt whisky is not a cheap drink.
Breakfast next day was also excellent, I especially loved the black pudding and the pancakes. I was sorely tempted to hide some in my pocket (pancakes, not blackpuddings) for later but held back.
Hope to return in another couple of years for the third visit.

“water”

we stayed here for 2 nights and have to say all the reviews about location are perfectly correct, however we do agree with several people that the food is very expensive and portions are very small .not what one would like after a hard days walking. The other bigger problem if you are doing a hard days walking is the water......they have notices in the bathrooms about the water not coming off the mains and so may not come out of the tap instantly and also that it may be a bit discoloured because of the peat in the water......we tried to use the shower head only to find nothing came out when the head was higher than the bath...it also took 15 minutes to get 6inches of hot water in the bath. In the end we gave up and dipped our toes in the water. For the prices charged we do think this should be a priority.

Most relaxing three days spent for years !! Initially we had planned just using it as a base for our munro bagging, but we ended up doing a few munro's at high speed ( because of not wanting to be away from hotel for too long !! !!) -rest of time just loved relaxing in most gorgeous hotel ever !! lots of books, games ,jigsaws, good company, lovely wine. Decor 10/10- Hosts 10/10- Food 11/10. !!!
