“Genuine slice of history!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2010

Our second vist to Talbot House this year!
If your after hotel levels of comfort and service then look elsewhere!
Talbot House is a WW1 historic sight which has been left more or less as it was in 1916! Therefore you will have to live without en suite's and room service!
What you do get is a genuine slice of histrory!
I believe that the house is run on a non profit basis.
Kind of a cross between a good youth hostel and the imperial war museum!
If you do stay please be respectful of the history that goes with this unique location!
Town is also nice, but undergoing renovation.

“This place will always be special in my heart”

What a wonderful place to visit and stay. Its was a night at the museum. The history of this place is awesome 500,000 soliders of the 1st World War visited this place and chapel. The Chapel is in the loft. Im speechless. I cannot find the words to describe my stay at this place. A small guest house within the museum. If you come to this place and stay over and it doesn't affect you deeply in some way even to the point of tears then you shouldnt have come. There is a presence in this place that i can only describe as deeply moving and peaceful.

“Ideal historic venue to stay if visiting Ypres (leper)...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2009

Ideal historic venue to stay if visiting Ypres (leper), being just 11km West. Little changed in nearly 100 years, a must for any history buff/student visiting this area. Breakfast has be booked in advance btw. Showers etc away from rooms, but not busy. Rooms equipped with single basin. Light sleepers should look for room at the rear of the house, can be small noisy at the front. Recommended!

“Atmospheric base for a Last Post pilgrimmage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2008

Talbot House or "Toc H" is the rest and recreation facility set up by Reverend "Tubby" Clayton for British Tommies in the Great War. It is a hotel as well as a museum, offering several clean but spartan rooms at 25 Euros a night, room only. Rooms only have a sink, and baths/showers are shared. Singles can stay in twin rooms for the single rate. No food is provided, but you can cook your own in the kitchen.

Staff are volunteers from the Toc H Charity.Visitors are offered the customary cup of tea, traditionally offered to soldiers in the First World War when they arrived. The ethos is Christian, but as Tubby Clayton was no bible basher, neither are the staff.

As you would expect, Talbot House is rammed with moving and sometimes surprisingly warm and witty memorabilia from WW1, including some signs written by Tubby himself.

I have stayed here about four times, and have always been made most welcome. For a cheap and cheerful place to stay in West Flanders, this is worth checking out. Transport links to Ypres, to experience the Last Post are very good.

I have awarded 5 stars because star ratings should reflect vlue for money, not absolute quality standards. You can't get a better deal for 25 Euros/£18!
