We arrived on the rainy season. Not that terrible as might be interpreted..
The way to El-Castillo is a typical Latin American rural "highway" - you definitely need a car but not necessarily a 4X4, just do not rush. The remote village has a charm of its own - streams around and the tip of the lake; and the glorious Arenal from an amazing angle.
The nest is located on a small hill, with great views of the volcano right out of our window – active day and night. The room was perfect - clean, well equipped and very comfort.
Breakfast was delicious – we did not need more. Ellen - the owner - has many friends in the village and around and was very helpful with her advice. There is a nice family restaurant next door at the small attached motel - food was excellent, though not sophisticated. With Ellen's help - and in the proper "low" season - they may let you leave your car there - much easier than the short climb to the B&B. We recommend taking the jungle trail in the wood that takes you closer to the Arenal, although rain is expected always there – mainly at noon.
