“Get away”

My husband, I, and our three teenage children stayed at this location for two nights in December 2011. The weather was horrible, but it was a nice get-away. We enjoyed the natural and commercial hot springs, visited the Butterfly Conservatory, enjoyed an evening with Pizza John, and did some hiking. Ellen was not on location and although her staff was nice, it was difficult to communicate. Luckily our son studied Spanish and was able to interpret. My daughter discovered a few bugs in the shower and was not impressed, but after all we were in the forest of Costa Rica. Breakfast was delicious with a variety of foods to please everyone. We rented both rooms; one for ourselves and the other for our children. The curtains in our room did not close completely which was a bit unnerving, but both rooms were clean and orderly.

“Expensive but great !”

My wife and I spent only one night in this B & B in december. We had just been robbed all our things and the weather was terrible so the atmosphere wasn't that good. When we arrived, the owner wasn't there and the guy in charge didn't speak english but we managed. We enjoyed the stay eventhough we didn't see the volcano (too misty) and we didn't use the spa ! That says a lot for the facilities ! A bit expensive though for a place in the middle of nowhere.

“Totally worth it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hummingbird B and B. The room was perfectly adequate (though not luxurious). Ellen was absolutely gracious, and extremely helpful with her local knowledge. The incredible views of the volcano and the Lake, as well as the beautiful gardens and Ellen's hospitality made this so worth it. Ellen offered us a rainy season discount without us even asking, *and* helped us figure out how to get our tires (yes, plural!) repaired.

I would say that a car is a must to stay here (El Castillo in general, not specific to Hummingbird Nest, which is conveniently located on the main street through town). It's a bit of a haul on a dirt road to get here, but there is safe parking once you're at the B&B.

We found our own nightlife and cheered on some local guys playing soccer. That said, if you're looking for a "tourist" experience, or really enjoy the nightlife, El Castillo might not be for you...it's a small, Tico town with mostly (very friendly) locals. But if you're looking for a quiet place to relax and unwind, we loved this quiet mountain town, and would stay at Hummingbird Nest again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: There are only two rooms at the B and B. Call ahead to make sure there's one available.

“Perfect relaxing location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

My daughter and I wanted to be away from the noise and commercialism of La Fortuna. Hummingbird Nest B&B offered the ideal setting: a perfect view of Arenal, peace and quiet, beautiful gardens, an extremely neat and clean room (complete with a well stocked bar), friendly pets who made us welcome with wagging tails, and a delicious full breakfast to begin the day.

The location was ideal for zip lining, a short walk to the butterfly conservatory, and close to hiking at the Arenal Observatory Lodge. The best kept secret in Costa Rica is that the Arenal volcano has not erupted for a year, but we found lots to do in the area and were glad we had allotted four days there.

I suggest if you have much baggage you check with owner, Ellen, if you can drive up to the hotel/restaurant at the top of the hill next to her B&B to drop it off. Otherwise you will be hauling bags up a lovely but steep path through her garden with about five switchbacks.

Added bonus was Ellen giving us great suggestions about restaurants and best activities. She even joined us in rappelling five waterfalls which was one of the highlights of our trip.

Room Tip: Only two rooms in this B&B. Ours was comfortable and very clean.
